Set resolution and dpi for hdmi lcd screen in build.prop?

I bought an android tv stick (h96 pro) with the intention of building a handheld gaming system by plugging it into an lcd screen and attaching a game pad. The bits arrived and I immediately tried to test it but I hit a snag. The stick doesn’t seem to know what to do with the screen. I get a picture, but only in the centre of the screen, and it seems to be displaying the top left portion of the android launcher “desktop”. I found out about the various wm commands and these allowed me to change the dpi and various things to the point where I could at least see a bit more of what was going on, but this did nothing for the display width. It was still just using the middle of the display. My question is, is there a way to use build.prop to inform the android device about the capabilities of the screen I’m using? Is there maybe some other way to do it? I know the specs of the thing, I figure (hope) I just need to tell Android about it, so it knows how to use it.

    Thanks
