Once I worked with a company that used to send patches to Linux upstream kernel for their own driver. Understand how it works:
- We submit the patch for a certain driver to the kernel maintainer for that particular driver (there are several maintainers for different kernel modules say a particular driver, or say a complete sub-system etc.)
- They review it and then merge or send back with feedback to modify.
- If it is merged then the changes will be part of Linux kernel or we need to send a new patch by incorporating the feedback comment and resend the patch and the cycle continues.

How can you contribute:
First choose a topic of your interest in Linux (lets say you like the PCI subsystem of Linux), understand that particular framework, how it works, how you can improve, etc.
If you have an improvement you feel like it's worth it, then go ahead and send a patch to the maintainers with enough verification data (how your change impacts, basically).

You need to put some efforts to find the maintainers of a particular Linux kernel module though.
