    Randy's Rant: Stupid Download Links

Do you know what makes me SICK!!!!!!

Do you know what makes me so angry I want to wrestle a 30 foot python?

Why is it that dumb asses in the Android community have to make it so hard to download anything useful?

I was searching for a tool, yesterday to help solve a problem (I won't get into the details of the tool...it doesn't really matter) and found every site that offered this particular tool posted a link that required you to download an app just to download the tool. Whatever happened to Google Drive or Dropbox, anyway!?!?!?!?!?!

    COME ON PEOPLE!!!!!!

Developers in this community should strive to help people...NOT SELL ADVERTISING!!!!!! Yes, I know...it's advertising that keeps the forums online...but not at the sake of making the act of downloading a major headache. Web site designers don't have to bury their download links among all of the ads.

On Pipo's Chinese Forum, you have to log in and tell them what mood you're in before you can download, and then...you have to make some kind of comment. What if I'm in a crappy mood, and I don't want to have to come up with something stupid to say before I can download something? Clearly, there isn't anything productive being posted there...because everyone has to type something short and sweet in order to get the download to work. Why not wait until AFTER you've downloaded the file and tried it out first...so you can at least make an intelligent comment.

You go to XDA Developers's site...and you have to search for the dang download link with a microscope to find it. Yes, they offer useful tools...but WHY do they make it so difficult? Other sites make it even harder...putting their download links in the middle of other links that take you to other apps. You have to click on three different buttons that say "download" before you get what you want. (Hint, it's usually the smallest, most inconspicuous link on the page.) And other sites make you enter some code on the screen, that you can't even read very well before you can download anything.

That's why every one of my ROM download links is in the biggest, boldest, most obvious font I can find, so nobody has any difficulty in knowing what button to press to download my ROM. It's very easy.

Anyway, I finally broke down and downloaded the app, because I was thinking it was worth it to get this tool (the tool was a piece of crap, anyway...I shouldn't have bothered). Low and behold...the app installed a virus on my PC that caused Internet Explorer to pop up every 5 minutes on my computer. Thank God it wasn't porn...because I was on duty at the firehouse at the time. Instead of working on a ROM I was trying to finish, it took me 3 hours sifting through the registry in safe mode on my laptop to finally get rid of this stupid malware. 3 hours of my life, I'll never get back. Because this particular malware doesn't have a way to remove it...except manually. Oh, but the app that I downloaded offered a removal tool I could use to get rid of their app...NO WAY JOSE!!!!!!!!! I WON"T GET FOOLED AGAIN!!!!!

Rest assured, Freaktab user's...this kind of crap doesn't go on here Freaktab.com...and I hope it never will.

Hi. Could you add mega to the g drive and dropbox list. Been using it for a year now and no problems with plenty of gigs. I feel your pain...

Yeah...Mega is OK. I was so angry, I couldn't think of it at the time.

I actually mean for this rant to be a little entertaining.

                  File hosting options

                  I feel your pain Randy...

I'd like to say that one of the biggest reason's I ended up as a Dev at Freaktab (aside from an invitation from Bob) is because Freaktab offer's FTP file hosting for the Devs here.

XDA doesn't host any files. I think Slatedroid used to, but no longer...

Many third party file hosting sites only offer temporary hosting (expiring links) or require survey / offer completion for downloads.

DropBox, gDrive, Mega and perhaps a few others are acceptable solutions, but may have privacy concerns or other limitations.

One good alternative for aspiring or part time Devs is http://www.androidfilehost.com/ . I was going to use this site before I joined the Freaktab dev team. They offer free, unlimited file hosting for Android developers, and it is (or was when I applied) very easy to get an account with them.

Whilst I can greatly empathise as over the past 30 years in IT Support, I have faced the same situation many, many times, you did essentially make the salient point, that it's advertising that keeps the forums online, as well as a host of other free services that we perhaps take for granted.

Same here... As an IT professional I have been pissed off many times while trying to download something. Most of all I hate when I am searching for a legacy driver and I find it in those sites that provide drivers for hardware but only if you install their downloader... No, thanks, I prefer to spend hours searching elsewhere.
Lately, I got pissed off at redcomponent.com: To download a free joomla plugin, you have to add to cart, register, fill in many details, go to cart, checkout, and find a small download button among a list of other irrelevant things.

I have discovered FreakTab recently, and seems great, but I couldn't find an old ROM that I wanted, the link is not working anymore, I had to ask Bob for it

Yes...we had a little incident a few months ago which all of Bob's ROMs were deleted by someone. You just have to send a request for it. It takes time to restore hundreds of ROMs, so we have to put them back up as they are needed.
