    Arnova 8b-G3 Finless 1.4 EXT4 and CWM - BETA 2

    UPDATE! BETA 2.
    This should fix the "sorry Settings has closed" problem on first boot with calibration. Let me know.

    OK folks with the success of being able to convert the 10b G3 to EXT4 and add my version of ClockWork MOD, I got a request from Mufi to make an Arnova 8b G3 ROM in the same fashion.

    Special thanks to Muri for dumping his stock ROM so I could make this for everyone.

    Please note: Since I cannot fully test this ROM it is a BETA version. I can boot this ROM on my 10G2 so I know it is not a brick ROM. But I cannot test anything else. Only your feedback will make it better.

    Features:
    1) Converted slower EXT3 file systems to EXT4 file systems. These means system, Data, and Cache!
    2) My ClockWork Recovery mod!
    3) GPlay Installed with fixes for full Market.
    4) Increased /system space for rooted apps to 300MB
    5) Increased user APP space to 2GB
    6) Added the SDcard platform.xml fix so apps can use External SDcard instead of just internal.
    7) Of course it is rooted with the latest ChainDD SU and SuperUser.apk

    Please see the README.TXT in the ROM kit for instructions!


    OK here is the new BETA 2 ROM for the 8bG3.

    ROM -> Arnova 8bG2 Finless Version 1.4 - EXT4 & CWM (147 megs)

    great Work. Although its 10 pm here in Germany I give it a try.
    It will take a little time because I have to use my girlfriends notebook
    with Vista, urrgh :-(

      Cannot get the device into flash mode, when I release Volume + then it boots up normal with Arnova Boot screen. Any Suggestions?

        I am not sure how the 8G3 gets into flash mode. Sorry.

        THis is what the 8G2 was and how some people did it. Instead of holding buttons they power off then do this

        Flashing:
        Connect ARNOVA to the PC via USB-cable At 2 seconds, press the "reset", you hear the sound of the columns twice.

        If the driver is not installed, install it.
        In Windows devices should see:

          Ok Bob,

          i managed to flash after erasing IDB as you described, now I have a big problem.
          On startup it tries to calibrate touch screen; while this I get the message "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped". By pressing ok, it starts the counter announcing its going to calibrate again.
          I cant start CWM to as you described in ReadME.


          EDIT: Now, I try reflashing, perhaps this may help...

          EDIT 2nd: Problem is still there. While startup and touch self calibration, i still get the described error and can do nothing.

            OK I know what it is... BAD BAD BAD Arnova puts BS in settings.apk to stop you from doing what we are doing.

            How much longer will you be up? I have to cook a new system.img

              I wait for it. If I don´t answer today, although in Germany its already sunday ;-), I write in 10 hours or so.

                BETA 2 ready

                I updated the first post with the download link to BETA 2.
                This should fix the "sorry Settings has closed" problem on first boot with calibration.

                  I'm hopefully downloading.
                  I will reply if succeded or not.

                  EDIT: BTW, can you create a Stock ROM since its not available on Arnova website?
                  I don't know if its necessary, but it will be if there are problems with hardware or so
                  to use guarantee services.

                      Hey Bob,

                      great job, now I could started the tab right.
                      Wifi works, Gplay works, now I go to make a benchmark test,
                      after that I want to try starting CWM.

                      EDIT: Benchmark says nearly 500 more points then Stock ROM.
                      Did you change keyboard? I can type much faster now.

                      EDIT: 50 MB more free RAM, now 657 MB free, if no app opened.

                        The speed up is because of the EXT4 file systems! Stock was EXT3 and it is slower!!!!!
                        Arnova is BEHIND in development. Almost ALL ICS 4.x ROMs I have looked at for other tabets are all EXT4. Arnova stays with EXT3
                        Thus it is slow. So I converting it to EXT4 for ALL FILE SYSTEMS (/data /cache and /system). This makes it much faster over all.

                          Ok Bob,
                          speed is amazing as I have to say that it wasn't so bad before.
                          Boot into CWM works only via reboot app. I can't boot into from shut down.
                          Do I have to create an Ext4 partition on external sd to move apps there?
                          And whats the swap space for and what relation is good between Ext4 and swap space?
                          For example,if I create a 4 GB Ext4 partition what is the best sie for swap?

                            I do not know the button set for CWM for the 8G3. Sorry. If I had one I could probably figure it out.

                            However on my Arnova 10G2 if you have the USB cable unplugged and you do the button presses that you would use for entering flash mode, then it will boot into CWM. Try again same buttons etc for entering flash mode but without the USB cable plugged in.

                            How do you enter flash mode on the 8G3 anyway?

                            As for SWAP. You do not need any. Just choose 0. Seems to work for me with no swap.

                              With cable unplugged it does nothing.
                              To enter flash mode I have to push Reset and Volume down (-) and release both.
                              I had luck that I found this combination since it was not described anywhere
                              for this model.
                              But when I use your Combination with Volume up and power then first the black freaktab
                              screen appears and then for a second the colored boot screen. After that the tab shuts down
                              with a little noise like 'plopp' like pulling battery out of a started smartphone, don't know
                              how to describe else.
