I.T.WORKS TM701 tablet (aka NEXTBOOK 7 PREMIUM) WiFi Problem after ICS ROM 7P1N

    I.T.WORKS TM701 tablet (aka NEXTBOOK 7 PREMIUM) WiFi Problem after ICS ROM 7P1N

    Since april this year I have a tablet called I.T.WORKS. The type is TM701.
    This tablet is loaded with Android Gingerbread 2.3.1

    After some searching in Google I found out that the tablet is equal to the NEXTBOOK 7 PREMIUM.

    This tablet is using a capacitive touchscreen.

    Ofcourse everybody wants to have Android ICS 4.0.3. Thats the reason I found this forum.

    I used the custom ROM from Finless (http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.p...nd-Google-Play)

    This is working very smooth except that WiFi is not working in this image.

    After some communication with Finless I downloaded the stock ROM (according the instructions on this forum) from my second I.T.WORKS TM701 tablet and uploaded this to him.
    Maybe he can extract the drivers from the Gingerbread ROM and port this to the ICS ROM.

    Looking forward to a possible solution. Otherwise... back to Android (and gently ask if the stock ROM can be rooted)

    BTW: Without rooting this device it is possible to have access to Google Play!

    I am looking at your ROM now to see if we can fix wifi later on ICS.
    However because I cannot test this ROM other than to boot it (I know it's not a brick), we will need to take baby steps.

    First let's make sure we have a working STOCK ROM flash kit and wifi works.
    Please flash this and confirm that WiFi works and other stuff works. This is basically the ROM you gave me converted into a ROM flash kit. Once we know all works and have a basis to work with, we can then try to get Wifi working on ICS ROM.

      Hi Bob,

      I can confirm that the ROM is working. WiFi is working too! =))
      So we have a original tablet for sure.

      The way you go into flash mode is plug in the USB cable en the press for about 2 seconds on the reset button. This is the same as the NEXTBOOK 7 PREMIUM.

      The tablet is available for testing your ROM's.

        OK so I am not sure how well this is going to work out to be honest. ICS has changed many things especially how drivers work between gingerbread and ICS.

        I will make you a new system.img that has the GB wifi files in it (wpa_supplicant to be exact and a few modules like wlan.ko). If it doesnt work then we are stuck. Stay tuned.

            OK I have an idea to save time with this. Rather than cooking new ROMs lets see if we can just replace files.

            Since you can flash the rooted ICS ROM, I am going to ask you to get ES File Explorer from Google Play.

            Now after installing that, you need to do 3 things before you can copy files properly
            1) Launch ES file explorer and go into settings for the APP. In settings click on "File Settings". Turn on "show hidden files". Now go back to main settings.
            2) Scroll down to "up to root" and turn that on.
            3) Scroll down more to "Root Explorer" and turn that on. You will get a prompt and select YES. Then you will get the SUPERUSER prompt. Click ALLOW. Now if the check box DOES NOT turn on. Repeat this all again. Exit ES File Explorer and do this again. You should see a check in the "root Explorer" box the next time and may not get asked for SU permissions.
            4) Once "root Explorer" is now checked and confirmed, scroll down to "mount file system" and turn that on. THis will mount /system as RW.

            OK, ES File explorer is now setup.
            Please get familiar with navigation using this tool It will be our life blood to trying this out.

            To test go to /system and open build.prop. Select ES Note Editor. Once open look at ANY line that starts with a # character. This is a comment line. You can edit anything on a # line without hurting your tablet.
            Edit something simple. Back out and SAVE the file.
            Now reopen the file and make sure you see your changes!
            This confirms you have everything setup and we are ready to work on getting wifi to work.

            Let me know when you have done all this.

                OK here are the the wifi related files from the TM701 GB ROM.

                Apache2 Debian Default Page: It works

                Lets do this one at a time. Make a folder on your SDcard called something like wifi and unzip the files to that folder.

                Using ES File explorer go into /system/bin
                find the file wpa_supplicant
                rename it to wpa_supplicantold
                now copy the wpa_supplicant from the sdcard back into /system/bin
                finally set the proper permissions. once the file is back in /system/bin using ES FIle explorer hold your finger on the file name until a menu pops up. Scroll down in the list and select properties. In this menu click the change button. In this menu make sure all 9 boxes are checked and clck OK,and OK, etc.

                Now reboot. See if Wifi works. If not we will try some of the other files in order.

                      Ooops sorry got busy.....

                      OK so lets continue.
                      Now do the supplicant file like before but lets update the KO module.

                      Go into /system/lib/modules and rename the wlan.ko file to wlan.old
                      From my zip copy the wlan.ko file into
                      /system/lib/modules

                      Reboot.

                      So now you will have the gingerbread supplicant file and the wlan.ko file into the ICS ROM.


                      Lets see if that fixes it.

                        No worries. I was busy too the weekend.

                        So I changed:

                        /system/etc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf

                        and

                        /system/lib/modules/wlan.ko

                        After the replacement I rebooted the tablet.
                        Unfortunally still no wifi.

                        There is still no MAC address available in de About / Status screen.
                        But something else what I notice is that when I try to enable wifi, it doesn't take that long time before it stops searching. Also no error message anymore after stopping for searching for wifi.

                        Whats the next possible step!

                          I see that the Gingerbread drivers are Properietary and de ICS drivers are Open Source.
                          Sound to me that this will be difficult to get it working. Hopefully I am wrong!

                          Hopefully we can get it working with the few more isolated files which are left from Gingerbread.
                          Otherwise... bad luck for me and my I.T.WORKS tablet.

                            Terminal Emulator

                            OK run terminal emulator. Make sure you have the wlan.ko file I told you to replace and the old one there still renamed as .old

                            no run the terminal emulator.
                            It will open to either a $ prompt or a # prompt.
                            Either way type
                            su
                            Then type
                            lsmod
                            it should list all the kernel modules installed and one should be wlan.ko
                            If it is not listed then that wlan.ko kernel modules from gingerbread will not work on ICS and thus that is the end

                              The only kine what I get back from Terminal Emulator is:
                              rk29xxnand_ko 865127 0 - Live 0xbf000000 (P)

                              So this is not as expected.
