In order to provide a permanent work around to this problem I have created a custom ROM that pulls work from others in the past (Kudos to Paul O'Brien of MoDaCo fame, blinkydamo for the Helios ROM, and many, many others) along with a "fix" to close down the setup wizard and free HUdl 1's to have a new life.
All the details (and the code to create it yourself if you don't want to trust a pre-built ROM) can be found here: https://github.com/remay/tmf-hudl including full step-by-step instructions for how to install the ROM onto a Hudl 1.
What this custom firmware does:
- Removes the annoying start-up sound, and adds branding to the start-up splashscreen so that it's easy to tell that this modified firmware is installed.
- Disables the Setup Wizard, so that on first boot you end up directly at the desktop. (There are a few post install steps that you should take, documented as part of the install instructions)
- Removes the non-functional and Tesco branded apps (those that still work can be re-installed from the Play Store if you want them)
- Removes the [T] Tesco launcher button from the navigation bar
If you're after a solution that doesn't involve flashing the device, then see if this works for you: http://rob.themayfamily.me.uk/hudl-fix
