You cannot permanently brick these devices even with a bad boot loader. My ROM kit comes with loader 2.08 which you should upgrade to but until you get the drivers sorted, you cant do that. These devices have in a ROM area the initial flash booter and it cannot be over written.
Something to check. Go into your BIOS and look at USB settings. On my Asus Mobo I have a setting for "high speed USB". This causes problems with many of my USB devices for some reason. I think it is some kind of early USB 3.0 implementation that doesnt work well. Try setting your USB in the BIOS to legacy or USB 2.0 or whatever you have available.
Also make sure you are not running through a USB hub. Remember some external USB prots on the front of PC cases maybe a USB hub so try connecting to one on the back of your Mobo. Make sure other USB devices are unplugged except for keyboard and mouse obviously. Something else plugged in could be causing a problem.
