Sounds like you fell into the same trap as I did, about a Month (or so ago now)...
When I tried to install an S82 TWRP, on an M82 MXIII (1G/8G AP-6181) Box.
So when you say "MX Box" do you really mean the "MX Box" (First Gen!?), the MXII or the MXIII? I'm fairly sure that there IS A DIFFERENCE! Between all Three...
Assuming (For the moment...), You meant the MXIII. (e.g. The Box I crashed...) Then this was how I was able to fix it.
You'll need a used (or disused qTip) Plastic Ones are the best! (Just remove the Cotton Wads at the ends first)
Beelink's: 108k4 for RTL8188: http://www.bee-link.com/en/ (Downloads Section MXIII get the 1G or 2G depending on which you need) NOTE: That this will work. But if you have a newer 1G Device with the AP-6181 WiFi Chip inside it. This will leave you with out WiFi.
So you have the USB BURNING TOOL installed. Next you connect your MX Box up to the PC (via the OTG Port!), with the Power Adapter connected. But not turned on! Take that qTip and, shove it up the AV (Headphone) Jack. To hit the Reset Button. Holding that Button Press the Power Button. While continuing to press that Reset Button. Till Windows makes its "Ding" I found a new USB Device Sound. At which point you can then release the qTip from the AV Jack.
Windows should eventually find a WorldCup Device. If not. then you'll have to download something called Robomobo to install the correct Driver(s) for you. Thankfully I never had to... But YMMV!
Set the USB BURNING TOOL to use English, and then point it to the Beeklink 108k4 Firmware. That will install the 108k4 Firmware onto the Box. Assuming its an older Box with the RTL8188 Chip in it your DONE!
Otherwise you'll need to download the 109k4 (AP6181) Firmware to get the WiFi back.
**JUST NOTE THAT THE ABOVE ASSUMES THAT YOU HAVE AN MXIII!!!**
I have no idea how to recover an MX Box per-say as I have never owned One. The MXIII is the first Device I've had of this type. But I do know that an MXIII =/= an MX Box.

Wow, thank you very much for the informative reply, I should have stated in my first post, its an mx box. It's one that a customer has brought back to me, he says he's done nothing to it, it just wouldn't turn on one day (Hard to believe) All my others are fine, and have had no issues with openelec on.
I've followed all tutorials to try and get it working.
Heres what i've done;
1.Create magic sd card using 1.1.5 image on an 8gb sd card 2.All copies ok, reached 100% and successfully written 3.Remove all files off sd card and put in a temporary folder, and copy Dextars nand scrubber files onto root 4.insert SD card into mx box, hold down recovery button and insert power. Keep recovery button held down for 2 minutes, Leave box for 20 minutes. Remove sd card and copy original files back onto it. 5.Unplug mx box, insert sd card, Hold down recovery button and insert power, Keep held down for 2 minutes. Leave box for 30 minutes. 6.Unplug mx box, remove sd card, and plug power back in.
Somebody mentioned that it sounds as though the sd card isn't even being read, so putting it down to a faulty sd port, As i've tried a few different ones, created on different OS's, So have arranged for it to be repaired with the lady I deal with in China.
