VORKE Z6 PLUS SD card firmware update 20180126-SD

    Hi Freakers

I hope someone can help me RE the Vorke Z6 Plus SD card update maybe @trebor.

[edit: RESOLVED: skip to the post in this thread that solves the upgrade issue]

I don't have a male to male USB, so trying to update the Firmware on this Vorke box via the SD card.

Box is 2 months old. I have the old firmware 20171204 and the box is totally unstable, keeps crashing and won't connect to wifi properly.

Looked at tho OTA backupandupdate didn't show the latest firmware. So here's what I did.

    1) I downloaded the SD card updated Firmware and saved to my PC, from the link here http://freaktab.com/forum/tv-player-...ate#post691094

Specifically - this link for SD card zip: SD Flash Firmware
    www.mediafire.com/file/uwgn55nu07p2nd5/VORKE-Z6PLUS-20180126-SD.zip

    2) Unzipped the Firmware zip file on my PC.

    3) Connected my SD card to my PC.

    4) Formatted the SD card (FAT32) and copied the downloaded Firmware unzipped files over to my SD Card (2 files and one zip)
    - factory_update_param.aml
    - recovery.img
    - q201-ota-20180126.zip

    5) Ejected SD card from PC and inserted into Vorke SD card slot - it clicked in nicely.

    6) Held pin on the reset button, then plugged in power cord.

    7) Took out the pin when Vorke logo came up.

    8) Got the colour circle and "Installing system update" message on TV

However, at this point nothing seems to happen at all. The update appears to hang. I have waited over 30 minutes and still there is nothing happening. TV screen just stuck on 8. Vorke unit shows "boot"

What to do now!? I guess I will need to abort and try again..... will update this thread if I have any success.

Any advice or helpful comments would be appreciated.

As Found 08/03/2018 Glad to share the firmware for VORKE Z6 Plus TV Box (https://www.geekbuying.com/item/VORKE-Z6-Plus-Android-7-1-2-S912-3GB-32GB-TV-Box

    Update 1

[edit: RESOLVED: skip to the post in this thread that solves the upgrade issue]

I pulled the power cable out and tried again. This time the colour circle actually moves and update progress bar is actually doing something!

Finally it makes it to the end, then says "erasing".

The unit shuts down and then restarts....... but wait for it..... only to be stuck on boot and nothing on screen. The blue power button is not on.

I waited approx 25 minutes and pulled the plug again!! After re-inserting the power - there is no boot - but the blue power button is now lit up.

    Now what ??

      Update 2

[edit: RESOLVED: skip to the post in this thread that solves the upgrade issue]

Clearly the device is bricked. I've tried loading the new firmware onto SD card via the Burn Card Maker from China Gadgets https://chinagadgetsreviews.com/down...er-v2-0-2.html

However, I am unable to get any response from the device. I will now try to reset with shorting the pins - bu t not easy to know which ones.

        Update 3

OK I obviously tried the SD card upgrade route and that ended up bricking my box - which was totally dead.

So - happily I managed to piece together the steps to take to unbrick it and upgrade it. It now works flawlessly!!!

I found the answer to my question in update 2 above "which pins to short for a bricked box" (thanks to @vorke_z_6 ) screenshot of the pins to short on the Vorke Z6 Plus (see note 5 below): http://freaktab.com/filedata/fetch?id=692795

Seems I'm not the only one looking for a way to recover!! Thanks to @Jancales and @vorke_z_6 for their posts on similar issues.

I modified the advice given here: http://freaktab.com/forum/tv-player-...794#post692794

However, I'm modifying the steps mentioned in the above post as follows. NOTE You will need to go with the PC upgrade method and skip the SD upgrade. For the PC method to work, you'll need to find a male to male USB. I managed to dig around in an old box under my house to find one that was about 20 yrs old all rusty - but still worked!! So - have a good look through all those old cables.... I mean - who even needs a male to male USB - Stupid Vorke people!! Why not just use a standard mini connector to USB :-)

At your own risk - I take no responsibility if you F**k up your box / life by following these steps. I simply wrote them in an effort to be helpful, thank you :-)

        What you will need:

        - Male USB to Male USB connector. Try to test this cable on another device first so you know it works)
        - screwdriver to open box and a flat head to short pins (if your device is bricked)
        - Vorke box obviously! Mine was the Z6 plus - but these steps will possibly work for other boxes too (at your own risk!)
        - USB Burning Tool 2.0.8 (google it if you don't have it yet).
        - Latest stock firmware (you could maybe try others, but that would be at your own risk!) I used VORKE-Z6PLUS-20180126 (PC version) found here: http://blog.geekbuying.com/2018/03/v...date-20180126/ the direct link for the PC version available from Media Fire here: http://www.mediafire.com/file/u7a17o...0180126-PC.zip

[update Nov 2018: new firmware launched (2018-06-06) here: http://blog.geekbuying.com/2018/10/v...date-20180606/ - suggest to try this version first!! ]

Instructions for Vorke Z6 Plus (PC upgrade):

        1) Open Z6 Plus Box (3 Screws on bottom) Carefully remove and turn over the circuit board.
        2) On your PC (I'm using a windows7 machine) open and run (as admin) the USB Burning Tool 2.0.8
        3) Plug USB cable to lower Vorke USB port (see image above) and connect other end of USB to PC
        4) Plug in power to Vorke box.
        5) USB Burning Tool / My PC didn't see the Vorke box yet because my Vorke box is bricked. However, if your Vorke box is recognised at this point - it means it's not bricked and you won't need to worry about shorting the pins (so skip part 6 if your PC / USB Burning tool now sees the box).

        6) If your PC / USB burning tool does not see the box - you will need to short the pins on the chip.

To short circuit the chip on the Vorke - see image above - or the one here http://freaktab.com/filedata/fetch?id=692795)

Hold a flat head screwdriver between the indicated pins = (pin 5-6) in my case i tried 5-6 6-7 - without any damage) for 2 - 3 seconds. It *should* then.....

Windows gave the beep beep that it now "Sees" or recognises the USB unit ! At this point my Win7 PC loaded the device drivers (it found them automatically)
If your PC doesn't beep / find the USB device, try to make sure you short the correct pins. You will need to keep trying..... or maybe your USB cable is broken?

        7) Hopefully - you are now at the point where USB Burning Tool now "sees the device", after your PC has loaded the device drivers.

        8) Load Firmware into USB Burning Tool - I have downloaded the stock firmware VORKE-Z6PLUS-20180126 (this time the PC version) found here: http://blog.geekbuying.com/2018/03/v...date-20180126/ the direct link for the PC version available from Media Fire here: http://www.mediafire.com/file/u7a17o...0180126-PC.zip

        9) Press Start Button on USB tool (leave the default USB burning tool options as they are)

        10) Windows beeps and beeps (it's connecting and disconnecting or something!) - the clockface on the device after some minutes now shows "boot" YAY - back to life!

        11) the USB burning tool slowly does its thing and shows "Download System" with % indicator until........ "Burning Successfully" green message. It took about 4 minutes.

        12) When USB burning tool has completed - Pull out power and USB from Vorke unit.

        13) Connect Vorke device to TV. Plug power in. Should now get the "boot" on clockface and the Vorke logo on screen as the device successfully loads up new firmware.

        14) unplug everything and re-assemble the Vorke box. Good to go!

Success - the device launched correctly - now with updated firmware!

I hope this helps someone with the same.

I have not tried it as my box seems totally dead.... good luck though - please add your comments below!

Damn. Looks like my device is bricked too. Tried installing atvXperience. Looks like a great project, but no info about devices that they do not support. Looks like there is no DDR4 support. I tried installing it with burning tool. Did check "erase bootloader", but got an error at 2% (DDR error). Then I tried again without erasing bootloader. SUCCESS it said. I was happy. The box was dead. Lol :P

Bah... so stupid that I need to open the box and fiddle around. I hope I can get it to work again. Impossible to do this with a mac. I installed Windows 10 with Bootcamp and bought a male to male cable.

Thanks for you advice, Sol-geek-newbie. I'll try it soon.
