Hi trebor since you have a fair amount of experience with these things, I was wondering if you could tell me if you could tell if there is a performance difference between apollo and gemini? I am looking for a windows tv box to use mainly as a media player. I don't know having gemini would make a difference and therefore worth spending the extra $ on? Thanks for your time.

Not an easy black or white answer.

Newer chips often have better power usage, newer graphic better ram handling and newer features, they learnt from what the missed in the Previous Model.
Or they just alter things a little that make not a lot of difference in the real world, (Word and Solitaire will not improve greatly)

If your going to update, make it worth your while at the time
As whatever you update too will be out of date and the next one will come along.

      Ask yourself
Why do you need a new Box,
What is the Current Box not doing well enough.
And look for those features you need not been told you need.

Windows can be Piggy, better with Lots of Ram
A good SSD to get the data in and out, and good ram the list goes on and on

I have a few Older Atoms boxes doing set job they work, no need to tie up a bigger PC

If you're going to update and spend the Dollars,
Get some good bang for your buck and try to future proof yourself as best you can.

Check websites that compare (most likely already have) CPU's look at them side by side you will see its not Black and White more of a PUCE colour (Reddish Purply Brown)

These may Help or Confuse you more:

As a media Player it's all up to the Content you want to view.

A bike will get you from Point A to B as will car, it just how comfortable do you want to be.

trebor Thank you very much for the informative response. Basically I'm looking for a windows mini pc that can play 1080p hevc and 4k. Will the Beelink x45 for example be able to do this? As I know a lot of intels can't play hevc, thanks.

          This May help

Here’s a quick rundown of well-known hardware that includes dedicated HEVC decoding blocks, which definitely support efficient HEVC playback:
          • Intel 6th-generation ‘Skylake’ Core processors or newer
          • AMD 6th-generation ‘Carizzo’ APUs or newer
          • AMD ‘Fiji’ GPUs (Radeon R9 Fury/Fury X/Nano) or newer
          • Nvidia GM206 GPUs (GeForce GTX 960/950) or newer
          • Other Nvidia GeForce GTX 900 series GPUs have partial HEVC hardware decoding support
          • Qualcomm Snapdragon 805/615/410/208 SoCs or newer. Support ranges from 720p decoding on low-end parts to 4K playback on high-end parts.
          • Nvidia Tegra X1 SoCs or newer
          • Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5430 SoCs or newer
          • Apple A8 SoCs or newer
          • Some MediaTek SoCs from mid-2014 onwards
