    So I have a little time this AM.

    For the first test I am simply going to root the ROM but leave system.img in cramfs format.

      First TEST ROM Ready

      OK first test ROM. I will do this in small steps so if we hit a snag I know each step I made and can fix that.

      This ROM is:
      1) Boot.img has been modified to give root user RW access to /root and /data. /system is still mounted as ro due to it still beinn Cramfs.
      2) system.img has been fixed. It is still Cramfs but the 2 jacked up files and been replaced with the files you copied off your player and supplied me. It now can be mounted and files can be copied with no errors.
      3) SU and SuperUser.apk have been installed. YOu should now be able to run things like titanium backup etc that ask for superuser permissions. If you install a command shell and should be able to now type su and get root access.

      This ROM needs to be flashed with RKAndroid tool as it is in its IMG parts and is not a update.img. This is better for testing ROMs as you can flash just certain parts as we test more and more. I have a READ ME int here that is for the Arnova but it might help use this flash tool if you need it. The drivers you already have installed on your PC should be the same as when you used RKBatch tool. So you should NOT need to reinstall drivers.

      Also once we get a solid ROM done, can you help by editing the README? e.g. like how to get into flash mode on the a5a player, etc please? This way others that want this ROM have good instruction.

        My Hero...

        Thx for that, am busy downloading and will get back to you with results. I have used RKBatchTool, but only for update.img files. Is the procedure the same? Do I flash one after the other?

          In the Rom that bob ics done the software is in it simply click on the tool to bring it up and follow bobs instructions from there

            Offset problem

            Hi, I ran the util as per instructions. When attempting to sart the process, the app complains about missing offset. Only the parameter has a value in the offset filed but it is not ticked.

              You are correct! I forgot to package the parameter file! Hang tight I will uipload a new kit now.

                OK here is ROM test 1.1 with the parameter file included. Sorry about that.
                I hate when I make stupid mistakes.

                Again file name is 1.1 so you know your downloading the correct file.

                            Yesssss Masssster....

                            Your new title is Sir.

                            rom installed perfectly and all the roots were sticking out. I had to run a thorough test and almost everything is 100%. Boot time is around 20 seconds longer, but this is not something to worry about. The only obstacle I was unable to overcome is the CIFS Manager - I am attempting to mount a Windows Samba share, without any success.

                            Regardless of what I do, I am prompted:"Mounting failed with an error. Mount: No such device". After consulting the CIFS Manager readme and Google, I came to the conclusion that there were two possible causes of my problem. First is that my ROM has a problem with the CIFS module - I tried two others with the same result. Second (and more likely), the permission on "/mnt/storage/sdcard" and "/mnt/cifs" is 0775 and CIFS Manager requires 0777. I am unable to change these permissions.

                            Any suggestions? I have a little 22Tb media server and would like to replace my clunky media centers with these little media players. I am able to browse the shares with ES File Explorer but the native software cannot. Mounting the shares would solve my problem.

                              It's because this was just a test ROM to see if I can pack and unpack and add SU and superuser. This was only a simi-root TEST.

                              /system is still read only and Cramfs (which is a read only file system) which is why you are having these problems. This was just a first test! I do not like to make too many steps on a new ROM incase something goes wrong and I do not know what I did that caused it. Baby steps is how I work.

                              OK so next step is TEST 2 which will make /system EXT3 and RW.

                              I am super busy right now but I will try to do it this weekend.

                              P.S. I also have a CIFS.KO module that will work using MOunt Manager from the market. We just have to get you fully rooted.
