The recovery in my ROM is the same one in the official update from Nextbook, however, it is a partition image containing a bunch of blank space at the end of it.

OMA's image file probably doesn't have any blank space inside it.

OK i got the recovery issue resolved! i didn't manage to get CWM working, but i did manage to restore a working recovery... i used RK image tools to extract the recovery.img from Shaun's ROM, then used terminal (as root) to run flash_image recovery recovery.img -- after that completed i did a reboot > recovery and (luckily) it worked! i was back in (what i assume to be) stock recovery... so, still can't make backups, but at least i have a working recovery image in case anything goes wrong.

also.. has anyone else noticed that OMA's CWM recovery for the NX785QC8G is like 2.6mb while the recovery i extracted from Shaun's ROM is almost 14mb??

It looks like I will be releasing TWRP recovery and some parameter patches some time tonight...

Options will be:
Stock
2 gb data
4 gb data

internal sd card gets whatever is left over...

4gb is about as big as data can get without doing further modification to eliminate the internal sd entirely, or change to a data/media layout with the /data folder located on an sd card....

I may look into other options in the future... but I will be taking a break from this device to work on some other devices...

Never used the flash_image command in Terminal app.

You could download Oma's 2.0 rom from the XDA thread. Open it with a zip tool, and extract the stock recovery.img in the rockdev/image folder. Don't know how you'd be able to flash it without a PC and using the flash tools ---

You might be able to flash recovery.img with an app such as Flashify.

Worst case, find a friend with a Win7 PC and re-flash your whole rom. Flashing Oma's will take you back to stock recovery.

Have installed Oma's CWM successfully with Arctools, on both Shawnmt's rom and Oma's 2.0 rom. Oma's CWM says it is for a KK 4.4.x rom, and does require root. Used CWM many times for backups and restores, or wiping cache and dalvik cache. I have Shawnmt and Oma roms backed up, so can restore either if I want to.

Have never attempted to install on any stock rom, neither stock JB nor stock Kitkat update. Don't know if it works on these. Doubt it will, especially if not rooted, and they don't come rooted.

I remember the process like this:
--- Run Arctools
--- From Install apps tab, download Oma CWM 6.0.3.1 Recovery for ... Kitkat 4.4.2
--- after download completes, install it
--- now switch to Reboot tab, and do a normal reboot (NOT recovery reboot the first time!!)
--- following a normal reboot allow a few minutes for any system activities to end, then you should be able to boot to CWM recovery.

BTW, apps like Reboot Menu or Quick Boot work perfectly on this tablet.

TheTheTheTheTheTheTheThe recovery will not install on an unrooted system hence the install order in the instructions. However on the off chance I'm wrong. Put the tablet in fastboot by powering off the tablet, connecting to the PC, then holding power and volume up until the tab goes black after showing the boot screens. Rkflashtool will say found. Then untick everything but recovery and run the flash tool. That may work.

put the tablet in bootloader mode connect your tablet to your pc then use the tools to flash just the recovery
