Not that I put total faith in Chigz Tech reviews, but he didn't recommend the Mecool KM9. It failed his 4K tests.

    I have a KM9 and M8S Pro L . It's not as good as Mecool M8S Pro L

I'd go with the KM9 because it has Widevine L1. That will enable some (but not all) media streaming apps.

Between those two, they are basically the same. Just look for ram/storage/price. For better boxes - right now, for that money, no competitor imho. But for more-more money there is ofc nvidia shield. But, again, that depends for what purpose are you aiming at... X96max has factory unlocked bootloader, therefore rooted. Don't know about km9.
Just roll-a-dice and buy any of this two boxes + ice cream you crave for.

Managed to recover thanks. Just restoring TWRP backup. I'll try your method when it has rebooted

EDIT back in business. The second method worked eventually.

You can grab the recovery here.

Glaven, I think you can do that via pc usb burning tool method, just flash firmware img (with selected erase bootloader, erase flash).
Those links on droidboxforums helped me.

Last update for 4/32 and 4/64 versions is 20181219 dated. If you have any of this versions (NOT 2/16) of x96max, you can update. Just search on google: X96max firmware update. First couple of links are legit.
