Question - Dual Band receiver Minix Neo X7 can it receive on both bands simultaneously?

    Hi everyone,

I just got myself a new dual band modem (TP-Link W8980) and I have set up both wireless connection inside the Minix Neo X7. I've never used dual band before so can someone advise whether the Minix Neo X7 can receive from both the 2.5GHz frequency & the 5GHz frequency simultaneously?

If so, how can this be done because when i go into settings for WiFi it only seems to allow me to select one or the other.

If it cant be done, is there any way of activating this?

Being a noob they might be silly questions but surely there must be a way to receive on both at the same time which could vastly improve streaming speeds?

The reason for this question is that when i use XBMC, particularly the Irish TV video addons it constantly buffers which is very annoying. On that matter, if i am connected to my 5GHz WiFi is it normal to still get this buffering or do i need to chnage somethig in my settings to improve the WiFi links?

When i do a speed test on my pc it say my ADSL2 speed varies between about 5,000 - 17,000 Mbps, its very inconsistent. I'd like to know if these speeds are acceptable or whether the buffering i am experiencing is normal for these speeds.

Any help would be greatly appreaciated because this is my biggest issue with XBMC and the Minix Neo X7 at the moment.

OK, Firstly the answer would be no, It is not possible to do what you are wanting with receiving both the 2.5GHz frequency & the 5GHz frequency simultaneously in the sense of making your broadband connection faster. Not possible. If all your devices can handle 5GHZ then that is the setting you should have it set on.

It sounds like your issues are most likely related to

    A. Broadband Speed (sounds like a possible issue with your connection if you are varying 5,000 - 17,000 Mbps)
B.The servers you are choosing in XBMC
    C. it could be down to what ROM you have installed as i have noticed the speeds on wireless can vary from Rom to Rom. ( i cant comment on ethernet as i have not tried )

Hey, thanks for your response, much appreciated.

I am thinking about getting a 15m ethernet (RJ45) cable and connecting to see if the speed issues imporve. Probably the most sensible first step i guess at least i'll know if its just the damn internet or if it is a wireless issue.

Yer, my internet speed test tonigh is about 10Mbps. What do you think is an acceptabe rate for Mbps to successfully stream from XBMC? I need to know that i think.

Also, what ROMS have you found best for XBMC. Because this is my most important issue i am willing to try flashing anything to improve it.

I disabled meta data on Channel 1 and it flies but the Irish TV addon is still giving me issues with buffering.

The problem with Wifi is Air Time, a client on the edge of the coverage affects the client just a few metes aware from the AP.

Dual-Band means a device can support both, that's it, some new Wireless Routers can force a user to 5ghz as soon as it sees it can support it (especially 11ac), but most of the initial connections are done through 2.4ghz.

Ethernet will definitely be noticed in speed.

Most of us use the Minix through ethernet i guess, i personally would have love to have 5ghz tethering from the minix, but i have not ever seen an option to do that in any android device .

use the 5ghz band if you can. a hard wire connection via cat 5e/cat6 is best.

one of these will help: http://www.****.com/itm/New-Dual-Ban...item1e77c289d8

If your router can use them and you add one to the minix, your wifi problem will be greatly diminished.

As far as i know, you cannot use two bands simultaneously, most of the time they are one chip in consumer products.

To increase speed you can make use of Spatial Streaming (or Spatial Multiplexing), but that requires an AP with multiple Antennas, and of course, a client with multiple antennas as well. Supported only in 802.11n and .11ac

For power-saving reasons, no Mobile device has more then one antenna, except the iPad Air and Notebooks.
