Can you provide a more detailed description of your problem?
Which ROM do you have? Original firmware? Bob's Firmware? (1.3, 1.4, 1.5?)
Which wifi encryption? WEP? WPA? hidden or not?

And what did you do? Only clicked on "activate wifi" in parameters? Or clicked then choosed your wifi then entered your key?

And if you did all this, did you authorize your new device by clicking the dedicated button on your router or enabled your mac address in the web interface of your router?

wifi can sometimes be really tricky when you begin

Also if he is using my 1.5 ROM I set the scan interval to 300 seconds instead of 15 to improve battery life.
So after first boot it could take 300 seconds = 5 minutes per scan.

If you are running my 1.5 ROM and want to change that back it is very simple.
open the file /system/build.prop and neat the bottom you will see

wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=300

Just lower that number to how many seconds you want.
