How to boot to CWM if unable to boot Android - easy

I cannot find anywhere how to boot to CWM. So I found out by myself.
Step 1 - unplug your stick
Step 2 - put a pin in the hole of the stick and press (you will hear and feel it when you got it right). Keep pressing!!
Step 3 - plug the USB while keeping the pin pressing the button
Step 4 - let go of the pin and press the volume down key of your keyboard
Thats it. Enjoy! And give me Kitkat!!!

I see 500 people saw this already... Did it help anyone? I think being able to boot directly to clockworkmod recovery on device that does not boot is a pretty big thing, specially if you don't have a pc nearby... My advice to everyone is always instal cwm recovery and have one backup on the sdcard of your basic rom... Enjoy

Thanks for sharing that info. As you can see...many view....but not many reply.

You might share with us the brand and model of your stick.

Works on the mk808b. But should work on most tv sticks and boxes that use the "unplug, insert pin and plug in again" method. As long as cwm is installed, of course. Is there a reason for anyone not to have cwm recovery installed?

          Just a FYI...

Using just the term "MK808B" ( or any other ) no longer say's what make/model you are using... there is of course the original but there are also fakes and clones many of which do not even use the same exact hardware as the original one.

This is why you were asked WHICH mk808b it was... because they are not all the same any more.

MK808B with RK903. Anyway, should work with all mk808, mk808b devices and more...

              More info

              Hello,

I am trying to apply your method on a MK802IIIS with bluetooth.
Since it is not working, I'd need more info.

Step 1: unplug from what? HDMI, power supply , both?
              Step 2: ok
Step 3: which USB. I am using an external power supply. Should I plug the USB on the OTG port on one side and on the pc on the other side? Please be more specific.
Step 4: how long should I wait before letting go the pin.
Keyboard! Did you plug a keyboard? I am using a logitech mk400. When and how long should I press the volume down.

              Thanks

                Hi. so:
                1. Unplug from the power source (and OTG should also be unplugged since the stick may draw power from it. HDMI should be left on since you will need to see the screen to select what you need in CWM recovery.
                2. ok
                3. Plug the USB that's supplying the electricity to the stick (should be the one you are supposed to connect your charger to).
                4. Keep the pin pressing the internal button while you plug the power in and for a couple more seconds for good measure
                5. Keyboard - can be a standard USB keyboard, or a wireless combo like Logitech k520 or even an airmouse (I'm using an RC11 and also used the logitech k520). How long to press the volume down button? Just press like normal. You can wait one second if you want...

It will not work with Bluetooth keyboards (the kind that are only working after your PC operative system has booted up - not workin in BIOS for example).
I just searched your keyboard and the volume key is one of the function keys so you will probably need to press the blue? function key in the lower left side of the keyboard and then F11 while holding the first one...
Tell me if it worked for you. Good luck

                  Working on MK802IIIS

                  Thanks for the quick answer.

It is working like stated in the title :-)

I have 2 keys. The one I was trying with has an issue with the recovery. That's the reason it was not working!!!

With the other key your method is working nicely. It is only a pain in the a... to press the pin AND to insert the USB cable at the same time.

Thank you for advising this method.

                  Regards,

                  T.

This does not need to be in same time, important is only to first press the recovery key then connect power.
                    Maybe helps someone.

Strange rumors are floating around in this thread .
Are you sure that pressing the volume key is really nescessary? because i really doubt that USB drivers are loaded that early in the boot process. I often used this method in the past and never pressed any key on the keyboard and it always worked. For me it was also required to press the reset button WHILE inserting the power USB cable, not before.

Didn't see any strange rumors here... What do you mean with USB drivers? Is your PC loading drivers before you enter the BIOS with your keyboard?? Don't think so... When your stick is not booting to Android at all, how do you go into recovery by not even unpluging the stick? Lucky you.

There are 2 ways to get into the ClockWorkMod recovery - having a reboot app installed in your android and selecting "reboot" to recovery, or using this method... Only other ways is if your boot is messed up which has actually happened to me after flashing an empty boot.img file (I think). Then it might go into the recovery. But most common scenario is flashing a boot.img and kernel.img incompatible with your android tv and then being unable to boot at all. Therefore this method...

Seems like i somehow offended you, sry, that was really not my intention . I think you misunderstood my post, i will try to make it more clear:

That is exactly what i meant. Since no USB drivers are loaded, pressing the volume down key on an USB keyboard makes no sense to me (and for me, it also works without that).

When my stick does not boot, i enter recovery almost exactly as you described, i just don`t press the volume down key.

The "rumors" i was referring to were these two:

(reading this second one again i am almost sure i misunderstood Adainair here. I think he means that you can press the reset button first, and while keeping it pressed, you can insert the USB cable.

Yes these are not rumors this will send your device in recovery mod and now you can use CWM like is joaomfds explain in his first post.-
But is strange rumor if you mess recovery via CWM and RK batch tools.
