Ut1 no longer able to read external hard disks - any suggestions?

My Ut1 will no longer read external hard disks properly. USB sticks work fine but hard disks don't even mount, or continually mount and unmount on a loop. The best I can do is *sometimes* see the storage in es explorer.

I even reformatted a 1tb drive - the slow way. (Format is NTFS) The first time I mounted it after that it worked for a minute, I loaded up a movie on MX player which played for about 30 seconds and then it stopped and the drive was no longer recognised. Then the looping started again. With one drive I see a "USBMassStorage prepared" notification followed by a "USBMassStorage safe to remove" message. Other drives don't even do this - they aren't even recognised as having been plugged in apart from their led coming on. The drives are not damaged as they work fine in Windows and I can stream videos on Windows without problems, and they used to work fine on the UT1.

I am currently on the wasser 1.2.4 rom - I had the same situation while testing the wasser kitkat rom (which was too unstable to persist with so I went back to the 4.2.2 based one).

I noticed that a lost.dir folder is being created on the drive....not sure what that means.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

EDIT: this also appears to "break" the hdd for other android devices too. For example I have an ASUS TF300T tablet with keyboard dock that has a full-size usb slot. These hard drives always worked perfectly before when plugged in to that tablet but now are not even recognised. I'm at a complete loss....

192 views and no suggestions? Interesting....

    An update:

I reinstalled the Riley1.1 rom and external hard drive access returned to the UT1 and it worked nicely. However I just can't stand the stock UT1 interface!

I then tried installing the latest wasser kernel from here: http://www.freak-tab.de/wasser/kernel-ut1-280114-1.zip while keeping the riley rom installed. The problem returned.

Next I tried this wasser rom which I have been using for the last few days (
http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php?7952-K-R42-firmware-by-wasser) with the Riley 1.1 kernel. Still no good...

It is now obvious that the problem relates to lack of power getting to the external drive. With the riley rom and kernel it hums consistently and works.

So when I put the wasser kernel with the riley rom or vice-versa the drive seems to rev up and slow down, and never spins up to the right speed to mount properly. How is the power supply to the usb port governed by the rom/kernel?

Can others with a similar setup please report if they have the same issues? Hopefully the additional information above may help someone smarter than myself diagnose the problem.

In the meantime I'll keep trying different things...

It seems that it's a case of "So close yet so far" with this box!

      Further update:

Wasser 1.2.4 firmware from this thread: http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.p...1-2-4-firmware - with Rileyrom 1.1 kernel

The external hdd mounts and works for a while (say, playing a video for a few seconds up to about 15 seconds) then the drive spins down, unmounts and a notification pops up saying it was unmounted. The drive then spins up again and remounts. It is visible in es File explorer and accessible until I try to load a file again as above.

      Any help greatly appreciated...
