ATV120 AML 8726-MX Stick - Bloated Factory Firmware

Been using the Geniatech ATV120 Stick for a week. Great XBMC hardware acceleration support but the factory firmware is bloated with apps and processes. Also, XBMC SMB access is not working with USB Ethernet adapter. It comes preloaded with Airplay capability which runs automatically. Any devs willing to support this Android stick and build custom rom?...Finless...

I know there are many Amlogic boxes out there but not sticks. Here is a link to the ATV120, which is actually on sale now:

Also, factory firmware only on Android 4.1. Custom rom Android 4.2 would be a treat. Firmware link:

Geniatech: ARM-based edge AI solutions, embedded systems & industrial IoT computers. Custom ODM services with multiple SoC options.

Thanks for this great forum and Community.

Please install android terminal emulator and type this

    su
    cat /proc/mtd

Then tell me what it says.

    Bob
"Pzebacz im, bo nie wiedzą, co czynią"
"Прости им, они не ведают, что творят"
"Perdona loro perché non sanno quello che fanno"
"Vergib ihnen, denn sie wissen nicht, was sie tun"
"Vergeef hen want ze weten niet wat ze doen"
"Pardonne-leur car ils ne savent pas ce qu'ils font"
"Perdónalos porque no saben que lo que hacen"
"Oprosti im, jer ne znaju što čine"
"Forgive them as they know not what they do"

I bought one of these for the primary reason of CEC control - no other brand had done it so far. I've been able to delete all the apps that I didn't want to keep by simply uninstalling them in the settings menu. However, I find the firmware completely buggy and unstable, miles behind what's available with the MX boxes. I can't understand why geniatech are still only on Android 4.1 either. Overall I'm very disappointed with the atv120, but I can only hope geniatech bring out a much needed software update.

I am working on a custom ROM for this unit, but I have run into a problem that actually (I think/hope) only affects the YouTube native app the video stutters just a tiny bit, but enough to be very annoying, that's the reason why I haven't released this ROM.

I haven't been able to compile my own kernel, even when the source code is out, I cannot find a proper .config for the compiler, which would probably fix the issue, if I tweak the source code, but I've mostly given up on compiling it, so I am hoping for mygica/geniatech to fix them themselves but not sure if that will happen.

my ROM has features that the original does not have, along with a long list of tweaks (thanks to Finless) as well as support for Xbox360 game pad and PS3 gamepad, works great on emulators

if you can live with that I can release a very clean (no bloatware Chinese stuff) rom for you to play, but keep in mind it will be under your own responsibility.

There is a 4.2 version (beta), but Youtube is VERY buggy on that version, and I don't really recommend it, its kind of hard to install and its even worse to go back to 4.1, risky in a way.

This build seems to work well, a world apart from the Geniatech Android release. This is ChronicCoreys release, right? As with his other XBMC Linux builds I am having problems with loading addons. iStream gives a plugin.py script fail and mashup seems to not load any content. Does anyone have a fix for this?

How do I revert back to android? My attempts have been fruitless and the links provided have been taken down
