X7 power on with IR remote or sleep mode?

This might be a stupid question, but is it not possible to use the IR remote to turn the X7 on from a powered off state? I have it downstairs in a central location for all tvs in house so if I cant turn it on with remote is it safe to leave it in sleep mode forever or will it kill the hardware quicker?

Its going to suck if I have to run down to basement everyday to power on but im aftaid to leave in sleep mode for 24/7/365 or is it designed for that?

    1. IR signals from ANY IR are not made for distance nor do they go through walls at all. You would need some type of IR repeater ( they are available but I can't remember where I saw them )

    2. Keeping the device on shouldn't hurt provided there aren't any power surges... power surges can still hurt a device even if they are powered off when they are still plugged into something ( including a TV, or wired etherenet connection, or other device with a direct wire connection to the unit ). Surge pads, battery backups can limit the possible damage but they can not stop all of it.

    I leave mine on...

      keenana,

I was so focused on giving you info I thought was important... I forgot to answer your question itself.

For the IR to actually be able to work... the unit must be on or there is nothing to power the receiver and no OS to "listen" to it. Devices such as your TV let's say... are really on but just in a low power state... that way they can "listen" in order to power up fully when you press the "On" button for your IR remote. Your PC ( if you have one ) is similar... if you have something scheduled to run, say a backup or antivirus scan... it can't do them if they are really off... only if they are in a low power state can they "wake up" to complete such actions.

A surge bar can help prevent serious damage.

Thanks for the information guys. I do use an IR repeater already, but since you explained that and I know it won't work if off ill just use a surge and spike protector and leave it in sleep 24/7. Thanks again!

you can use a power plug with remote control to turn it on and off. This devices works from one room to an another room and costs between 8,- Euro and 15,- Euro with one or with up to five or six power plugs incl. a remote control with 1 to 6 on and off buttons and a on and a off main button. You can open the minix x7 and inside there is a switch to setup the unite to boot if power detected.
