Did you check is HDD mounted in system/mnt/external_usb, if not try to format your HDD.

They didn't really mean the system folder but the root folder...

          So look in /mnt/...

FAT32 is supported ( and can be formated ) on most all OS today... Window, Mac ( the two most common ) etc all support formatting to ... so if you can't see how, then use an internet search for the operating system you are trying to do it from... BTW... most external drives come formatted as FAT32 with a few MAC formated ones being the exceptions... that means, read the manual on yours, it may already be in a FAT32 format.

I have two HDD attached to my iMito MX1 both formatted with NTFS and I have no issue's Also I have a seperate USB driver I connect every so often that is Fat32 and it has no issue's

just be sure to look in /mnt/ not /system/mnt as that does not exist.

trust me stop formatting your drive.

My current setup iMito MX1 witha 750G USB drive(NTFS) acting as my /SDCARD/ (yep you read that right the physical devices 8G storage is all for installing apps and the HDD allows me to store extra app stuff saving space on the internal storage. Current I have 18 games totaling 4G of extra data all on the HDD and leaving the internal open for more apps)
and a 1T NTFS drive connected VIA USB to store movies on.

If your interested in how I did this just look at my statistics and dig through them as I have long forgotten the thread. lol

I formatted my HDD to fat32 and it still doesn't work.
When I go to the Storage on my Setting it looks like I have an 4.39GB of hand flash no meter if the hdd connected or not.

It won't be shown in the Android Settings under Storage....

It should show in the /mnt/ folder as you were told but you need to look at the names of the devices that are mounted since they can differ depending on who made your ROM. I've seen various names given to them...

On my current device it is mounted in /mnt/usb_storage/USB_DISK0/udisk0/ .... but the mount point could have been named something else like the one mentioned /mnt/external_usb/.... since there is no one standard followed for naming them...

You also didn't mention the size of the external hard drive... there are likely limits to what size is supported but I've yet to find any reliable info on it although a couple of folks have mentioned a 2Tb and 2.5Tb limit.... I haven't found any verification for that info yet though.

Last things I can think of ( other than trying another ROM if available )

Verify the USB cable does work using another computer... bad cables are common. Test using the hub you mentioned as well.

If the USB powered hub is a USB 3.0... test using a USB 2.0 powered hub... While USB 3.0 hubs are suppose to be backwards compatible, many report issues using them

Install paragon from the play store and see if it shows up in there.
