First device was a dual core rockchip 3066 with built in 2 meg pixel camera running android
4.1. It was OK, but kind of slow, and did not have Dolby digital surround sound passthrough,
it was however fairly stable and worked out of the box.
Second device was a quad core rockchip 3188, Tronsmart T428. It was a horrible device out
of the box, would constantly reboot or freeze. After months of swapping roms, thanks to the
great efforts of Finless Bob, Lewy20041, stafstrom, leolas and many others that made great
roms, this device was finally usable. With all their great efforts, Dobly Digital passthrough
became a reality and the stability greatly improved, but not perfect.
Third device was also a quad core rockchip 3188, (TV01 aka cs968). It was also not
functional out of the box, constant reboots and freezes. After several updates and improved
roms, cudos to Tech1, this box became more stable. It also was great for Dolby Digital
passthrough, with the improvements to the rom by all the dev's on here. It still has
occasional reboots, but tolerable. I also replaced the power supply with a different one, but
only helped a little, so not sure if replacing the power supply mattered at all.
Fouth device was an Allwinner A31 quad core (cs918S). Worked out of the box, very stable.
Not sure if it has Dolby Passthrough, only tested the basic functions for a few days. I was
finally comfortable giving this device to my daughter. She is lucky to know how to
turn on a light bulb, but she has no problem with this device at all. Soooooooo, I say that
this device is ready for people that just wants something that works. I could NEVER recommend
a rockchip 3188 to anyone that wants something that just works out of the box.
Fifth device is a dual core amlogic, Geniatech ATV 1220A. It has a built in ATSC OTA
tuner (tuner for antenna use in the USA). Even though it may be a little slower than a quad
core device, it works great. It is running android 4.1, and only has 1 gig ram and 4 gig
memory, but it is extremely stable. It works out of the box and has Dolby Digital passthrough
out of the box. No more jumping through hoops to just get passthrough to work. This is by
far the best android box out of the bunch. I could, in good conscience, recommend this device
to anyone.
