I already tried the TV Launcher from the Play store and though it works, it seems like there isn't much development going on for it.

Best launcher for X7
I recently purchased X7 and overall I really like it. Stock launcher is good but it lacks customization. I would like to know if there is any similar launcher (with big icons) can that be used in its place. I know there are tons of launchers out there that can be customized but I'm looking for an out of the box solution.

Go to my minix7 blog and to downloads. There you will find the TSF Shell. High customizable. Look at the preview-video in PlayStore.

Of all Launchers that I tried so far Smart Launcher feels the most TV-like (as in resolution and accessibility friendly) while keeping a clean minimal and customizable UI without to much bloatware and useless stuff made for Phones (like Nova).
Advantages:
- Seems to be made with Tablets and Google TV in mind
- Automatically align Apps on Desk (Sortable, Circle and Square-Mode)
- Neat, customizable UI with Theme support
- Drawer Auto-Categories (you can change the category manually)
- Stable and really resource friendly
- Customizable Gestures (Pro only)
- Own Widget-Screens (Pro only)
- Overall it feels very neat (my opinion as an professional UI-Developer)
Disadvantages:
- No Widgets in the Free Version
- No Gestures in the Free Version
- A bit short on good Themes (in terms of a professional quality, not taste) when compared to some more popular phone based Launchers. This is probably because there 's not that many users (yet). The basic Theme is pretty neat thought, you just need a good Wallpaper and change some settings to get it to eye pleasuring mode.
- No Widgets aside from Clock in the Home-Desk only on special seperate Screens. I personally see that as an advantage thought as it helps keeping a clean performance driven desk and helps keeping your stuff sorted.
- Gestures could be improved / extended. Like with more detailed settings like range. Or by adding a customizable gesture shape. But they work somewhat ok thought.

I have Apex Pro purchased, however, the stock one from the KitKat release from wasser updates to Google Now Launcher (prev. Google Experience Launcher). Apart from some keyboard bugs with gestures, it is silky smooth.
Apex has some window animation lags that the RK's cant handle, might be due to 1080p.

Such stuff is most of the time not the hardware 's fault. Thats a miss-deception that keeps popping up these last 10 years. Just using more powerful or "better" hardware is just a "workaround" for somewhat functioning code.
To be honest Google itself seems to be behaving that way as well with throwing out device after device generating hardware-cycle after hardware-cycle in a short amount of time. It 's just easier for the companies and developers to seek that way instead of writing and optimizing their code properly to begin with. Yea it 's not like most the developers want it to be that way. Either they have only limited time, resources or if they have plenty of booth they're forced to think cost-effective from their higher-ups.
Apex seems like it 's made for many devices, and tries to offer many customizations and such stuff leads to performance-break-ins, bugs and memory-leaks rather easily. Aside from that it might just not be optimized for that specific Hardware yet.
Thought if you like Apex you might want to go and send the developer(s) your feedback / bug-reports and if you're lucky they'll smooth it out together with you. It 's at least worth a try.

Thank you for all the suggestions, unfotunately none of the launchers fulfill the most important requirement i.e. it should be good for media center use "out of the box". In the past I have used both Apex and Nova to customize my tablet into "hubs" and it looked great but it took awful amount of time and I'm just trying to avoid that.
