New MK808B owner needing some advice

    Hi All,

I know this has all been asked previously, but I couldn't find an solid answer when trawling through various threads.

I've just bought an MK808B from geekbuying (this is a good source of originals isn't it?) and just waiting for it to arrive now. In preparation I'm trying to gain as much knowledge as possible.

Firstly, I'm comfortable doing all the flashing, and am not too bad navigating a Linux FS and using Terminal. (Been playing with an RPi).

I was going to go ahead and flash a Finless rom, but want to know for definite if this will provide what I want. My primary use is XBMC and secondary use will be light gaming using an X360 controller.

Part of my primary use will be to attach an external DVD drive, is this integrated into rom's such as Finless? If not, what's the procedure for adding them in, or can I simply grab some compiled ko's and insmod them?

By light gaming, I will be looking at things like ePSXe.

Finally, I would like a TV/10Ft friendly launcher, and is it possible to use my trusty RC6 MCE remote with Android?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Attaching a DVD drive to an Android device is not easy. Only very few DVD drives will work. There are some that are especifically made to support Android. ePSXe may work for simple games (like 2D games), but the 808B is probably too slow for "high end" graphics like Driver 2 etc. I think the rom with the best 3D performance is still Finless 1.7. If you decide do flash Finless 1.7, you have to update your libstagefright.so file, otherwise you will have problems with XBMC hardware decoding.

      Thanks for your reply.

Looks like I'll be ripping my DVD's then

I don't suppose you know about using an RC6 MCE remote do you?

      Many thanks

        No, I don't.

Most MCE remotes work out of the box. Xbmc wiki lists support for the rc6 and android is remappable anyway. It'll work but may take a tweak or two

As you got an mk808b and can't overclock the best thing you can do is stick to 720p and use Flumpsters Beyond XBMC as that has all android fixes hard coded without you having to add files after installation.

I was actually thinking about this myself a while back, if the system would actually pick up an external DVD player via USB. I'm going to say 'no' and this is not going to work anytime soon, but keep us posted as im genuinly curious.

Here is my horribly outdated FAQ, may help with some questions you may have, all the overclocking questions still apply, XBMC is outdated.
            Currently Using:
2 x Nvidia Shield TV | MiniMX III
            Retired Devices:
            MiniMX III-II | Mk808b Pro | Mk808b Plus | Raspberry Pi 1 + 2 | UBOX R89 | MK808 | MK808b | CS008 | X1 4K (rk3288_809) | CYX_809III | Ouya | CX-919 | S82 Plus | Tronstmart R68

Thanks for all the replies. I've been looking into the DVD thing a bit more and it looks to be very much possible but needs quite a bit of work. I believe some other modders have managed it on some select devices.

I got my 808b today and went straight in with installing Finless 2.1. It works quite well and using Antutu got a score of over 12000 (CPU set at 1.4Ghz). But the interface still seemed a bit laggy. I then proceeded with XBMC and everything up to 720p was absolutely fine, but 1080p can start well but then ends up with jitters.

After looking around, it looks like the advice given to me previously might be the best option of Finless 1.7. I'll see how I get on.

The 1.7c finless runs well, much better than the 2.1. 4.2 android never ran all that well on the mk808

4.2 runs very well now...rock solid....stock 4.2 is very good just a lot of bloat....which i removed....Media center and mine are based off of stock from Nov.

I thought 1.7c was only for the 808 and therefore no WiFi or BT?

Have you got a link please? Also, is yours native 1080p, if so how does it run?

After some more reading, it seems part of my lag issue may be the fact I'm running it in a 1080p kernel. I have a few 3D bluray I've ripped from my collection and these need to play in 1080 otherwise 1080 scaled down to 720 and then SBS processed by the TV will result in a very poor image. Any advice on this?
                      Thanks again all.

                        Options:

                        1) Sell the mk808b and buy the mk808 or an rk3188 device
                        2) Use the 2dark4u kernel and lose wifi/bt
                        3) Run at 720p

Prahjster has made a 1080p OC kernel, but have yet to see solid evidence it has worked, I'm skeptical due to the use of rkpatchomatic as this hasn't worked on any mk808/b kernel. The mk808 will 100% run 1080p at 1080p on the 2dark4u kernel, with the GUI fps running at 60fps.

                          That's a shame

I can't sell it as I can't afford to sell to re-buy. I can't lose WiFi as this is the only means I have of it connecting to my server, so that pretty much leaves me to just run at 720p for now.

With ref to the OC kernel (i've spotted the post now so no need to link), is there some special cooling needed as I didn't really want to mess with the stick too much.

I just find it really odd that these things have hardware decoders built in and yet it's so hard to use them. Are we still stuck with licencing issues and Rockchip not releasing all the info etc?

As a side note, I would be more than happy to just flash an XBMC only rom if there are any of those floating around? I.e. no Android - just pure Linux and XBMC.

The mk808b overclock kernels just don't do what they are supposed to do.

What more should we expect out of an ancient 808B? (everything stock + OC kernels - no cooling or hardware mods - except 3A power supply) 720 ↑ | 1080 ↓
