they come a little late to the party!
I personally will wait for the new ugoos ut3 tv-box which is ready yet as hardware, it needs only some software tweaks until released; btw, it really has very good specs like REAL 60 fps 4k hardware decoding

pictures of this tv-box can be found here :

Ugoos UT3 is first RK3288 TV box in market, support hardware acceleration for 4K video and H265 codec

        Looks great!

However, I would need an ethernet adapter though, as wifi coverage throughout my house in not sufficient for high-def streaming everywhere (and I will be buying 3, or 4 boxes of whatever S802 device gets to a decent level firmware maturity first).

No, the hardware is not ready. RK prototype template/reference boards have been sent out to manufacturars like Ugoos, but they haven't finalised thier version of the hardware, let-alone started in earnest on the OS.

It is going to be months, and even then, getting RockChip to release anything for us to srart tweaking properly is going to be an up-hill battle (as it always is).

For now atleast, these AMLogic devices are a good bet, especially once some talented AMLogic developers get on-board.

Nice find. Thank you for posting, but I prefer devices that are hard wired via Ethernet.

Worst than their Gen.1 they cut the Ethernet, 4GB flash they target the "just stream" market.
and they lock the firmware in the hardware's trustzone so no 3rd party ROM would be possible,
              it's hardware lock not software.
forget it, it's useless outside of China.

as usual they're selling under cost to gain the huge user base and attract foreign investments.

                        Tronsmart Vega S89-H?

Or is any other device that has more performance / functions for ~100 - 120 USD ?

Any of the Netxeon made S802 2gb devices that run Finless 2.0 (Tronsmart S89H, Beelink M8B, MX III) would be a better bet.

The MI Box is seriously hobbled.
