Nextbook 8" Android Tablet (NX008HI8G) Experience...

I picked one of these gems up at Newegg for $70 and have been playing around with it the last couple of days. As expected the Nextbook firmware is a mess. It has an older hardware manufacturing date of 03/2013, that's over a year in inventory. I had problems right out of the box. Google Play Store would not download and always reported an error. Email had already been set up with somebody else's email address (haha). I did a factory reset and luckily that fixed the problems.

Rooting - Cydia Impactor did not work! But, I had su root access via ADB. So, I manually copied over a new su, set the chmod's, rebooted and boom, I had full root access. Busybox was already installed.

Software Config - Google Play Store reports many apps are not compatible (not a surprise). I was able to sideload quite a few apps, including TuneIn 9.1. Chrome could not be updated (error says "missing critical components" during the install), but Dolphin Browser installed and ran fine.

Clean Up - I used Titanium Backup Pro to remove system apps I did not want, integrate updates to system ROM and make a backup. Love that Titanium Backup Pro app (a bargain for $6 and one license can be used on all your tablets).

Speed - Boots fast and runs apps fast for a dual-core tablet.

Screen - 8" IPS display. Beautiful.

Tablet - Not thin like people commented on Newegg. It has a normal thickness for a tablet. I had no problem with back pressure causing ripples on the screen.

Overall - An OK tablet for everyday use like web browsing, email, WatchESPN, etc. and simple game playing (it ran Angry Birds just fine). An accelerometer is the only on-board sensor. For $70 dollars, it's the cheapest 8" tablet I've seen.

I'd be happy to support this model, but I don't have a ROM dump from one of these yet...

Maybe, but not necessarily... alot of Nextbook ROM's have that in the build.prop, just like alot of them have an unused narcpi.ko wifi driver for no reason... sloppy work when Yifang Digital modifies their ROMs from one model to another... there's all kinds of leftover trash from past builds in their ROMs.

I do suspect the HI model is very similar to the HD model and the Trendy 800T model, and the Prestigio PMP5580C, but I have no idea what the differences might be...

Hardware-wise, I believe it is close to the NX008HD8G, except it has the 8" IPS screen.
