    s89 Disappointing Day 1 / Day 2 better...

    Hello guys,
I got this s89 as an upgrade to my old cs918, but actually there is no improvement in any area... other than Antutu score of 30114, which is pretty good, but amounts to nothing if there are other serious issues.

I am running the latest stock rom 104k4, and these are some of the things I am finding:

1/ The volume (Using USB audio out) is all or nothing, full volume or zero... neither my wireless keyboard nor sliding the volume via the mouse allows anything other than on or off

2/ netflix / youtube / xbmc all have broken, stuttered audio which is really not acceptable. I am using USB audio out to a very good USB DA Converter. My old CS918 is perfect. (EDIT see update below, the issue is the USB output, SPDIF works fine)

3/ wifi gets only 10mb down, but I get 47mb on cs918 (EDIT - still and issue)

4/ ethernet is also slow, I get 19mb down but get over 74mb on my cs918 (EDIT-still not as it should be)

5/ many apps work in cropped vertical mode, ie the app preoccupies the dimensions of a mobile phone, a thin vertical rectangle in the middle of my screen, the rest black. This is odd since the same apps occupy a horizontal space on my CS918 (for example, Speedtest.net app)

6/ cracking sound when audio starts, which is really bad for speakers. I noticed this on BBC iPlayer. (EDIT fixed using SPDIF)

7/ no way to shut down/standby... (EDIT GRRRR!!!)

I will try the custom roms, but truth be told, if this had been bought through Amazon, I would be returning it tomorrow morning... so I am really disappointed.

    Mark.

I have not experienced this, but it might be related to your point 2

2/ netflix / youtube / xbmc all have broken, stuttered audio which is really not acceptable. I am using USB audio out to a very good USB DA Converter. My old CS918 is perfect.

Why use USB Digi/Ana when you have SPdif/HDMI to play with, you're right it should work but I would imagine that the drivers are either not perfect for Kit Kat or Am Logics new chips

3/ wifi gets only 10mb down, but I get 47mb on

I don't know what your reason is, maybe your box is too close to your router personally I get around 30~35 @2.4Ghz 40ish @ 5Ghz and 65 Mbps using ethernet on a finless rom or 30Mbps on a factory Rom

4/ ethernet is also slow, I get 19mb down but get over 74mb on my cs918

    Please see above document

5/ many apps work in cropped vertical mode, ie the app preoccupies the dimensions of a mobile phone, a thin vertical rectangle in the middle of my screen, the rest black. This is odd since the same apps occupy a horizontal space on my CS918 (for example, Speedtest.net app)

Fair comment, but do note that improvements to box are being made weekly, I am currently using Xposed Framework to modify apps to Landscape on an App by App basis

6/ cracking sound when audio starts, which is really bad for speakers. I noticed this on BBC iPlayer.

    I Haven't noticed this but I don't use iplayer

7/ no way to shut down/standby...

You can standby by pressing the power button on the remote, but it's true shutdown equates to a reboot

I will try the custom roms, but truth be told, if this had been bought through Amazon, I would be returning it tomorrow morning... so I am really disappointed.

      Hi,
Try making a advancedsettings.xml for xbmc.. solves the buffer issue

      The stutter.. try this,
      Desktop/Settings/storage/cache (delete)

      I agree on 5 and 7..
Ibbc has halo effect when looking at f1 race, seems software upscalled.. vids horz lines are blocky (at least on mine)

site daves trailer page: play 1080 using mx white pix floating around

Cheer-up.. tomorrow.. is a new day.. with perhaps a new fw

Ps.. antutu scores are all hacked..fake

Stuttering is because of missing root rights as far as I know.
Due to a lot of tweaks I would recommend Finless Rom 1.5. I have no issues at all!

Problems caused by USB Sound device

Noticed these problems myself when using a USB device that outputs with sound. I have a Mele F-10 Pro with mic and speaker incorporated into a air mouse.

The USB device overrode the audio outputs and cause audio to be distorted and performance to lag (i.e. buffering / stuttering) on all applications using sound (i.e. netflix, xbmc, etc). I think this is so since there is not USB device is system settings for sound. The USB device hijacks the sound output and it is not processed properly.

Devices like the Mele and Minix probably include the proper audio switching mods and drivers. I could not find an app or firmware that has resolved the issue yet. Problems are documented on the Mele forums:

Grateful if some development efforts were applied to this issue.

                  Thanks for the responses guys.

AUDIO: I found the stuttering/cracking audio/lack of volume control is NOT an issue if I use the analogue output... but that defeats the purpose of having bought a very good sounding DA converter My son pointed out to me that the CS918 had the same USB audio issues early on, and that Lewy or Wasser made some sort of fix for it AFAIR...

ETHERNET/WiFi: the same cable /distance from the router when comparing CS918 and s89... so there should not be such a massive discrepancy.

BTW, is there a way to toggle off the menu buttons at the bottom of the screen (using Apex), the CS918 could do that too by means of an extra menu button which would hide all the menu buttons...

                  Tx

SPDIF works well instead of USB

                    Hello guys
                    Just an update.
I replaced my USB cable with an SPDIF one and (THANK F***) it works very well, no stutters, cracks etc... so excellent...

Now to figure why xbmc crashes every time I try to save a network location path to look for my videos on my PC... xbmc crashes immediately. I will uninstall and reinstall it tomorrow. I had restored it from Titanium, so perhaps I had some oddness from that.

                      Vega S89-H disappointing here also

After all the waiting and with high hopes, I am completely disappointed in this box. I try to reserve my opinions until I have used the devices for a couple of days, but this box is not really usable at this point in time. I also, updated the firmware to the latest 104k4 and rooted by using Finless's root zip. My major problem is that the audio keeps dropping out. I am using a high quality HDMI cable going into a HDMI switcher then into my Harmon Kardon A/V receiver. I even did a factory restore to see if that would make a difference, but NOT. Yeah, I got an Antutu score of 31804, but that means nothing, since it is not useable in the present condition. Some people with this device says that it plays Netflix very well, but for me the video quality is horrible, using both wireless and Ethernet, and the sound keeps dropping out. It took almost a year for my other boxes to become useable with all the help from Finless and all the other devs, I hope I don't have to wait another year for this device to become useable. I have a TV01 (aka CS968) running android 4.4.2, and now it is awesome, but took almost a year to get it to this point. Also, the volume is so low that I have to crank up my A/V receiver, which I have never had to do before with any of my devices.

I have tried youtube, Netflix, XBMC and some other video players, and all have the same problem of the audio dropping.

Geekbuying should stay on Tronsmart a** until they get their act together. I thought for sure, these new boxes would be better, since they are maturing. My hopes have been dashed.

UPDATE: I moved HDMI cable to my A/V receiver, now the audio is working the way it should. XBMC is also working good.

clarkss12 that last message needs more than an UPDATE edit. It should be re-titled "Disappointed with my HDMI switcher" At least tell us the brand so we can avoid it.

                              disappointed with my HDMI switch

The HDMI switch that I am using, is a 4 or 5 year old 4port switch from Monoprice. Every switch is different. From everything I have read, there is no switch available that is guaranteed to work with every device. I guess I should have waited a day or two before giving my opinion. So far I am satisfied, except for Netflix, it still has a horrible picture. Next, I am going to try my Logitech C310 webcam.
