Need recommendation for MK802IV custom ROM

    Hello everyone,

I spent the whole day yesterday searching this very valuable forum for a custom ROM for my newly bought, new S/N (201312*) MK802IV.

    What I need to work:
    1. Smooth 720p video playback,
    2. Good WiFi speed,
    3. (Hopefully) being able to stream from a Windows share.
    What I've tried:
    • Latest Rikomagic FW (201403-something): as crappy as the one the stick came with. Stutter 720p and low WiFi bandwidth, about 150 KB/s.
    • Neomode Hybrid ROM 1.7: smooth 720p, but still low WiFi, screen flickering and image disappearing every few seconds.
    • Neomode Custom Rom MK809III Version 3.1: pretty good WiFi, but stutter 720p, screen flickering, sound interrupting every few seconds both in YouTube and MX Player.
I am pretty sure poor WiFi performance is not a "router channel crowded" issue, my desktop which is near my mini pc during testing can download with 4-5 MB/s from Internet.

So: any recommendations for a good stable ROM I could use?

    Thank you in advance.

Re: Need recommendation for MK802IV custom ROM

There are a number of variants to the MK802IV line, most notably the use of the less stable "-T" chip in later models. Knowing which SOC the device runs is somewhat crucial to a good pairing of FW and HW. You probably have an RK3188-T chip, but the best way to verify is by opening the case and checking the top of the SOC.
Unless you have an issue with JellyBean, I would strongly recommend Neomode's NCR 1.9a build. It has stable WiFi and will certainly do 720p SMB network share playback, n it supports external USB drives and ethernet adapters.
Although other devices may be fine with WiFi band interference, these arent. It should be suggested to still use WiFi Analyzer to determine if channel crowding is a contributing factor in your WiFi performance. Where I reside I'm surrounded by numerous broadcasts, all on two specific wavelengths. My WiFi was a mess till I saw the issue with diagnosis. Simply changing my router frequency channel turned my signal strength and stability to gold.
    Good luck and enjoy!

Neomode's NCR 1.9a is very good

Thanks so much for your reply mechaone. Incidentally last night I have installed precisely Neomode 1.9a and so far looks very good.

+ no flickering nor image disappearing
+ 720p playback is flawless using MX Player
+ WiFi is good, Internet speed has been measured by a benchmark tool at about 2 MB/s. I did switch my router to a non crowded channel, that couldn't hurt I guess .

      - some YouTube videos buffer often and other run just fine
      - streaming from a Windows share on my desktop stutters but that's not a problem as I think I'm gonna move my external drive to the MK802IV anyway.

      Thanks again for you recommendation!
