NextBook Premium 7 SE Capacitive Screen (Next7P12) YF031211...

First, thanks to Finless Bob and the team of android rom cookers here. Cudos.

I have two tablets that claim to be manufactured in March 2012.

Despite the lack of a hard serial numbers discovered so far, I tend to believe the factory recently output a bunch of the 7SEs that hit Big Lots and other places. I bought from Amazon Market and that seller's four or five pages all show unavailable now. I see 8 SEs making the market for about $20 bucks more now and - about when they run out - I suspect we'll see the new 10 SEs show up for about $150 retail.

I didn't manage to get a dump. Though I managed to install the ADB drivers (by substituting the device hardware info in the driver software), I never saw or commanded the Next7P12 with ADB.

After several installs with 1.5 and 1.4 (that hung on the NextBook boot image or during Fenice's recovery mod), I manage to get the FreakTab page. That is, I seemed to be installed, but I had no touch.

I got the YF1211 stock rom and the 1.2 with google play to install (without problem*).

With 1.2, I do get occasional pop-ups notifying me that System Update will not run. Since I don't want Nextbook to overwrite our settings, I am guessing this is a good thing... though I have not yet figured out how to turn that notification off. I also had to disable Astro to eliminate similar pop-ups.

The 1.5 with the app injector sounds like the place to be! In the meantime, I am appreciative of the efforts of rom cookers here for the ability to have a rooted, android-market-using tablet.

BTW, unless I missed it, nextbooks web offered one update.img for a wifi fix, but had no firmware tab under downloads until yesterday or so. I see two firmware offerings - for YF1011 and YF0911, but nothing for any of the other numbers I have seen mentioned here on FreakTab.

In any case, this might be a good time for folks to download whatever NextBook is making available...

If the YF1211 1.2 ROM worked then the 1.5 ROM should work as well. They are built off the same stock ROM!

However understand that with 1.5 and the conversion to EXT4, the first boot up the screen, audio, etc MAY not work at all. So after first boot up, wait till the screen times out, then reboot. On next boot up all should be working fine!

As far as that pop up message it's because you have a file named update.img on your sdcard! The file explorer is seeing that and giving you that message. Remove that file and you should be good.

"Vergib ihnen, denn sie wissen nicht, was sie tun"
"Vergeef hen want ze weten niet wat ze doen"
"Pardonne-leur car ils ne savent pas ce qu'ils font"
"Perdónalos porque no saben que lo que hacen"
"Oprosti im, jer ne znaju što čine"
"Forgive them as they know not what they do"

Thanks for such a quick response!

First, you are correct... I do (or did) have that file on my microSD card.

Well... how long should the first reboot and conversion to EXT4 take?

My system seemed to hang on the Nextbook boot animation - the Lincoln quote. When I rebooted, sometimes I could get to Fenice's Recovery Mod... sometimes it completed very quickly, sometimes it would hang. With success reinstalling the stock rom and the 1.2, I grew more confident in the steps I had learned. I managed to get the 1.5 to the Freaktab page, but w/o touch features.

You dern sure are encouraging me to try again though... hehe...

        Otay...

With respect to 1.5: I can get through Fenice's Recovery Mod to the Freak Tab boot animation, but without any touch functionality.

No matter how long I wait or how often I reboot, when this screen arrives, I do not have touch functions. I even tried to reboot into recovery mode after reaching this screen.

I reinstalled the stock rom and used the factory reset before trying any of the rooted versions. No better result.

With respect to 1.2: I do regularly get system update not working notifications. To a lesser extent, Astro also crashes. I was able to disable Astro (using System Settings, I recall) without apparent negative consequences.

I have turned off every setting that seems in any way related (using the system settings, Titanium Backup and market-based settings). The only thing I have not tried is disconnecting from the market. As you indicated, I had an update.img on the MicroSD, but I searched for them all and then reformatted the MicroSD just for the heck of it.

Long story, short: I can make the stock rom work and the 1.2 (with the annoying sys update notices)... but I cannot make the 1.5 work.

The notification: "Unfortunately, SystemUpdate has stopped." seems to be related to the wifi. Would you consider rooting and adding GPlay (your 1.2 treatment) to the new 1211 upgrade.img from the website, which is intended to address the wifi problem? I guess it's listed now as a Netflix fix:

Though I intend to continue learning how to root myself, you seem to have the process down to a science and I have a time-sensitive need to get this tablet to a caregiver for a family member.

FYI: In your 1.2, I have successfully edited build.prop and vold.fstab and I have been reading in system.img and boot.img. And though I still cannot see or command this tablet with ADB, I picked up an Allwinner that I do see and command with ADB.

And also, I think your original reply assumed that I meant the firmware pop-up when I said system update. Oddly enough, I never got that pop-up notification until after I installed your 1.2 Rom. Before that (and at the time I started this thread), I had put and replaced several copies of update.img on sdcard root and was always left waiting for the prompt, which the instructions for the update promised.

Thanks again for your work and your consideration of this request.

*EDIT* BTW, my current build number (using your 1.2) includes "...eng.root.20120318..." date. The newer update image has a "...eng.root201205xx..." for a date code.
