    Is upgrade worth it?

I am using a Minix X7 with the Finless ROM, and I too am banned from that other unnamed forum... but enough of the politics.

I am quite happy with the X7, politics aside, but I have not been able to get some apps to run well. The X7 does good with XBMC, but not so much happiness with other apps like Netflix, Hulu+ and Amazon Instant Video.

I see that the X8 ships with Netflix pre-installed. That is a good sign. How does it run on the X8? Do the other apps that I mentioned, Hulu and Amazon, run at all? And what about YouTube?

I have been looking at the FireTV as a possible upgrade, it is cheaper, runs a good Qualcomm cpu, XBMC is installable without rooting the device. All the apps I run work on it. But I can't make up my mind. The X7 has been a workhorse and still works good (thanks Finless). But I would like a more consolidated unit. Right now, I run X7 for XBMC, my TV has Hulu+ built-in, but the TVs Netflix app runs terrible, so I have to use the Netflix in my BD player. All in all, I think I am the only one in the house that can figure it all out.

    What do you guys think?

I just googled the rk3288 and it looks impressive. I wonder if Minix will develop a box with it. Even though I have some forum/political problems (don't ask me why)... I like the Minix hardware. It has served me well.

I think.. Its better to wait..
Not many users have the x8... Yet
It also gives MINIX the time to workout the bugs/fw
          And
As you noticed, any negative comment on MINIX forum about there product line
Will get you kicked.. Its just a matter of time, when these users come here

I'm also hoping... For review by No_spam_me..
If the unit is better.. Then his Vega ( s89h vs x8h)

          Rk3288.. No reviews/user-feedback yet
-in the end of the month, we will see..

          Anyway.. My to 2cents

...the funny thing is, I thought I was trying to be constructive... maybe "constructive" and "negative" are hard to distinguish. But I really like their products, so I am hanging in there. Funny thing tho, I guess they never heard of vpn's over there.

I guess I will wait and see. So far the X7 is still working good... no need to rush and make a bad decision.

I see "Mbox M8" ads all over this site, I wonder if it is any good?

I don't think the Fire TV supports reading off a drive directly attached to it. Which for me was a huge negative.

Actually there is a program called StickMount that allows the FireTV to access external USB drives. I don't know very much about it, but I have read a lot in the XBMC forums about it. I am pretty sure it works okay.

I do like the idea of being able to mount a USB stick in my X7, it works slick and easy.

If I were in your situation I would keep the X7 and wouldn't buy the X8 till its well proven by several users that the things that you want from the X8 work properly.

Yep, this "Minix" cannot handle critics and comparisons at all - seems to be China-like

Yes, I think you are right. I was just reading another thread here about the X8 having some thermal problems. That really surprises me, because my X7 always runs very cool. And I run it OC'd a little bit. Maybe the X8 needs a little more work before I plunk down my bucks.

Also, just saw a review of the Fire TV on YouTube. I guess it runs okay, and certainly the price is competitive, but it seemed a little too much like a 1 company platform. If you know what I mean. I guess I am too used to the Minix being so open and easily modded.

Kind of seems funny, but maybe I'll buy an X8 and under-clock it!!

Yeah, I read that too! It chokes back the freq if it gets too hot, just like my i7, hehehe. I guess someone will mod theirs to mount a fan!
