I would say yes, NUC would be better in ur circumstances. You'll need to use XBMC to get the best out of it though but it will give u all u want and more!

Hope over to the XBMC hardware forum and you'll find as much information on the 2820 NUC than u could ever wish to know!

The X8-H is a great device but with your specific needs and budget the NUC hits the spot exactly!

Well, its a Celeron...so...ehh. I guess it would be ok, but I like the android world on my device. Two entirely different machines. All it is is a really cheap and small PC.

you need to buy ddr ram and hard disk, and if you want a Windows OS, it didn't come included too.
if you sum all the cost, the final price double the minipc price

I got plans to buy the same NUC but I still didn't.
Although both are using a different OS and obviously some apps aren't optimized in a different way I guess I would say that the NUC is better, so if the price is not an issue then go for it

You also can run android in the NUC but I highly doubt the performance using android would be better than using the x8.

But as I said I still couldn't test it and I also couldn't find anyone who got both devices to give a better opinion based on facts

I have the dn2820fykh NUC and the X8. I'm running Win 8 with 8GB of RAM on the NUC and a 120GB SSD.

Good. I was going to amazon to buy the NUC right now so just arrived on time

Which one do you think it's better when it comes to 1080p playback, XBMC, Sopcast and Ace streams.
I know some other differences in regards to what software each device can run but those 4 things I mention are the ones I care most.

I mainly only use it for XBMC and the fusion plugins (Ice films, 1channel etc). I don't know about ACE streams or SOP cast. Performance on mine is excellent, superior to the X8, very smooth and no lag at all and I've had no problems throwing my 1080p films at it. The downside I would say is the apps are better on Android. Windows apps are fairly poor. I only use sound through the HDMI so I don't know about passthrough or anything. I've said in here before that the NUC I have is a really great piece of kit but you pay £300+ for it and that's not even the i5 versions. One final thing is it won't run Windows games, its not powerful enough. One other thing, I've tried running Intel Android X86 on it and it doesn't really work properly, very buggy and things are broken.

It doesn't have Miracast. Some of the NUCs have Widi but the 2820 doesn't have anything like that.

I assume you are talking about an i3 NUC. I was thinking to buy the N2820 nuc, so I guess I should pull the trigger and see by myself.

I got an spare 2.5 HDD so it would be £125.92 with ram included

I've got the N2820. So my experience would be based on that, I think the more power one is the i3 but there might be an i5 also can't remember.

NUC + openelec is way better than any of these boxes If you are after XBMC....No matter Celeron, i3 or i5...

+1 to the above... i dont have a NUC but i have a Asus EB1033 which is underpowered than the Celeron Nuc and it can play Anything i throw at it... i like openelec but i have on myne win7 + xbmc... with windows i have whatever else i need and its by far the best solution for media playing... I also got a Trosmart S89H and a Minix X8h but after some days with them i went back to PC. Its not that this boxes have problems.. in the opposite its damn good and fast but you need big time to configure them and you end up digging in folders to put settings that is not so user friendly like windows.. maybe im old.. who knows

Thank you everyone for great responses. I went over to XBMC forums and..looks like people have modd-ed Amazon Fire TV as well. That's only $99 and supposedly runs XBMC very well. They have also patched it to read files from USB drives. Comes with remote and will receive properly tested patches as well.

So, I am now down to three choices:
1. Intel NUC 2820 with OpenElec (not spending money on Windows) - not sure if it can do miracast, airplay, airplay-mirroring
2. Minix X-8H (Android)
3. Amazon Fire TV (Amazon's version of Android, rooted, with XBMC loaded)

Only you know what usage you will give to a media player so you are the best one to decide what's best for you.

In my opinion:
1-NUC: if you don't want to spend too much time in forums and you are happy using windows, linux or just xbmc. Or if you just need a powerful media player but discrete pc.
2-X8: if you love all what android involves and you don't mind check the forums often to fix this or that issue that many android devices have after launch.
3-FireTv: if you just care about xbmc, amazon instant video and Netflix and don't want to spend more than 10 minutes flashing mods or patches

The 3 devices have different prices but every person has a Duffryn budget so I won't comment on that.

I just bought the X8-H because I'm a geek and I wanted to have an android pc that was at least as powerful as my Galaxy Note 2.
Now that I got it I see that there are few things that my GN2 does better and as I'm not willing to spend too much time modding, browsing forums or waiting for updates I decided to buy today the NUC N2820 because once it's setup for the first time I won't need to be checking forums for rom updates, patches and so on
