The stb manufacturers are to INCLUDE the android TV system... An all in one. Same as with smart TV's. Of course there will also be separate android TV only boxes...
I would be shocked to see any cable/satellite STB use or include Android TV. The provider's STB in the US push all of the content purchases through themselves nearly exclusively to maximize profits, it's not going to happen. I looked again at the video. I can see the possibility of using a cable/satellite STB with a Andoid tv based smart tv working very much like the Xbox one with pass through. The only other way with a separate Android tv STB I can see as viable is to have both hdmi input and output ports on the box like the xbox one.

I reckon the engineers at google were not born yesterday, give them some credit... we'll see how it pans out, it may be a completely web based option, so I would watch BBC ITV Ch4 via the web, as I can do here in the UK. In fact, now, during wimbledon, I can see MORE than I could see on a regular TV. So perhaps they are seeing how regular set top boxes are a bit antiquated and limited.

You may very well be right. I should not jump to conclusions only the possibilities. I am very happy to see Google give the tv platform another chance! I wonder how tightly controlled Android tv will be, for example will users be able to install apps like xbmc? Google has some good ideas I like so far. I do feel it's important for them to index all of the content that user sets up and uses into the search engine much like the Roku 3.

I think it's pretty easy for an app to be Android TV ready, just some minor tweak/agreement thing (from what I read), so that part I am pretty sure you'd see xbmc etc compatibility, but I dont know what it would take for Android TV to be able to search all apps, especially with an app like xbmc which has hundreds of addons which themselves are not at all standardised. On top of that, a lot of the xbmc addons I use are extremely slow to search, partly because they are searching "dodgy", illegal sites for movies etc... so I very much doubt this would be incorporated as it would make the experience sluggish, not to mention the legal issues.

Does Roku 3 search 1Channel movies, for example?

Roku and some of the other boxes index mostly popular commercial streaming sevices together. I am sure Google will go this route as well.
