Yes IT is possible to change the bootimage. the boot animation is actually three parts on the 701i that I have. We will cover that one first.
The boot animation is located in /system/media
three parts:
bootanimation.zip (the actual boot animation)
heng.zip (internet tablet splash screen)
shu.zip (internet tablet splash screen)
one of the splash screens is for boot and the other is for shutdown.
Now the pesky polaroid splash screen
What you are actually looking for here is the "initlogo.rle". Which is found in the root folder of your tablet. So if your still in /system/media you just need to go up by two folders. ;P
In theory you can create you own splash screens and bootanimation and just replace these. Just make sure you have the orientation and size correct. Im not going to go in depth on how to change the images and the desc.txt to match what you want. There are dozens of tuts out there for this, and also dozens of apps that will do this and allow loading custom images from sd (.zip files). Hell there are also things for the pc (windows based) that can push these images and animations.
