    Hi, I'm new here & have a few Q's:

Hello everyone,I am new to this site and have just purchased a m8 s802 from geekbuying. My device has stock xbmc v13.0 and I saw that I can update the rom somewhere else, but that site had not so friendly users lol... I'm glad that I found this community because you guys seem much friendlier from what I've been reading! I thought these boxes came with the major addons already installed and that things like firmware would be already updated, but apparently I was wrong lol...Anyways is it easy to check the current firmware version? I tried to do a system update but it gives me an error every time... Why implement this feature when it doesn't work?!If I don't have an SD card can I use a USB drive to flash it?Is 6/17 the latest version of the firmware? Thanks in advance!

Welcome, F/W is actually not quite Correct, it refers to the Android OS. These square m8 boxes are not well designed.

06/17 was a giant leap for m8 kind. Bob's v1.7, sticky thread, built many improvements on it. He's working on v1.8 based on FrankenROM, released next week or so.

For xbmc by Oman see below thread by Danielv561, link etc.

Never flashed ROM from usb stick. Might copy to internal memory first and try.

Low capacity Sd cards, 2GB 4 etc, are cheap on ****. Sd card readers for pc are Cheap too.

      Have fun.

        Thanks for the info!

I bought a SDHC 8gb card today. Do I format to fat32 or ntfs?

I will use the FW from geekbuying and try that first, or is it recommended to go straight to Bob's version?

Where is Bob's firmware? Is it much better than OEM? Is flashing using Bob's FW the same process as the geekbuying process?

I'm hoping to find something that has updated firmware and updated xbmc with popular addons pre-installed. Does this exist? Ideally I would like 1 flash process to do everything as I have purchased quite a few boxes as my friends were also interested in purchasing. Does Bob's FW do this? If not does anyone know if it is possible and can point me in the right direction for download link and instructions?

I apologize for asking so many questions, but everyone has to start somewhere lol!

Thanks in advance for your help folks, it is very much appreciated!!!!

OK I found Beyond xbmc by flumpster, and the demo video is exactly what i was looking for!! Is this considered a ROM or just an APK?

I know an APK is an app for Android, but what's the difference between a ROM & FW?

Is it possible to load APK, ROM, and FW onto 1 SD card so I can install everything one after the other right away on the 5 boxes I bought?

Once again I am sorry to ask so many questions, but at least I really do appreciate the help!!!

I'm asking so many questions because I don't want to brick my units mainly, and because I want to ensure I learn properly!

f/w is usually chipset update, eprom etc but here f/w means ROM

fat32 or ntfs doesn't matter, all devices usually read fat32

install total commander and click on an apk, will install app

ROM is installed via recovery mode: Bob's reboot app: recovery
Or stick a pin into a/v hole till clicks, power on, let go when recovery loads

factory reset in recovery before installing new ROM

play and learn, value is in learning

nvm bricking too much, apps don't brick and if installed properly on right box Bob's ROMs won't brick

All the repositories are in one zip,
download and choose install via zip,
navigate from system files root to storage,
install downloaded zip by just clicking on it,
give xbmc 1 minute & done
install video addons on mass: click get more and all listed

Top hits below, no need to install repos 1-by-1 from below link if done above all-in-1 zip:

                    Have a good week.
