You can root it use `TPSarky-VonDroid-Root` .
I tried using that tool, but it doesn't recognize my device, even though rockchip drivers are installed and I'm able to flash the stick, I make sure usb debugging is enabled and connected to pc but still doesn't work.

Try pulling the img apart then flashing.

I tried extracting the image and using the new kernel with older rooted image but it doesn't work, device won't boot, or goes into a boot loop.

I was able to root the rom by replacing the su file in system image under xbin folder and recompiling the rom. I used the su file from the rom meant for the rk903 wifi/bluetooth chipset.

However, after installing beyond xbmc, I'm also finding there is stutter, picture is not playing smooth.

So its not just me , also makes you dizzy after while watching it.

Move the mouse while the video is playing and it smooths it out temporarily.

I wonder if there is any other rom from another stick with same wifi/bt chipset that might work in this stick?

I got a new rom for this new version of mk808b, update_mk808b_v5.0_103j2102, just downloaded and installed however, still same problem this rom is not rooted and still has the judder/stutter problem with video playback, I tested on Beyond Xbmc.

This is completely unacceptable. Why are they releasing unrooted roms for this device when in the past the stock roms have always been rooted. Last rom I used for the RK903 device was: update_mk808b_v408j2404_overseas and it was perfect, rooted and no judder/stutter.

The only thing they changed is the wifi, so why are they messing up a good thing? Why don't they just use the old rom and add the drivers for the new chipset.

Also, when I bought my five units from Aliexpress seller, I was not told about the revision or hardware, item description clearly mentioned RK903 chipset, when I got my units yesterday, I thought they were clones.

Do you guys think I should open up a dispute? These new units are useless. Video is unwatchable, makes you go dizzy.

Another thing I notice with this new rom is that you can't use it's kernel image with the older rom. I extracted the kernel image from it using factory tool, but it renders the whole stick unbootable. Also, if I flash this old kernel kernel409j1080 on the stock flashed new stick, it still runs fine like nothing happened. And shows the newer version of the kernel in info in settings not the kernel409j1080 version. Kernel image is not even extracted when using the RK3xxx_firmware_tools tool, only using factory tool (FactoryToolV3.4) extracts the kernel image which is useless anyways.

I believe the drivers for the new hardware are in the system.img instead of kernel.img. I think the kernel is actual part of the system.img?

maybe they fixed the colour issue.

New firmware, colour issue and picture stutter the same. No change.

Change log would have been nice, plus someone from the development team to post here,
rather than going through sellers etc...

Have you tried using the newer bin with older firmware...Just a shot in the dark. I had to do the opposite when loading kit kat on mk808b orig. you will loose wifi and bt.

Only change I noticed in firmware was a couple of settings apps had been taken out, that's it. What a waste of time. Took a few hours to download the damn firmware from the crappy server and another hour to flash and install apps etc., and still had the stutter issue. I don't really care about the color issues, I've adjusted my tv set so colors don't look so bad but stutter issue is giving me headache.

Upon further playing around with the firmware with rk tools, it seems the kernel image is in two places, in boot, and in recovery. When the image is extracted there is no kernel image that it put out. Upon extracting the boot and the recovery image, there is a file called "kernel" in the folders. Without the img extension. I tried to patch this file with a tool I found here to make it 1080p and then recompile the firmware, it flashed ok, but did not boot up and the blue light did not come on. However, I was able to flash it back using the the rkbatchtool to the stock firmware.
