Newbie question: what to do on a new machine, eg system backup (which program/app?)

    I'm fairly new to this.

I have a habit of making system images and separate backups in Windows to be able to to back to a previous install.

I recently ordered a tronsmart s89-h, didn't arrive yet but want to be prepared.
Which program/app should I use to make a system backup (I want to try different ROM's) and does it make sense to backup apps themselves and the files belonging to the apps (user files) (does it make it easier to reinstall the apps and settings to a new ROM?).

I read about NANdroid, HoloBackup, TWRP en CWM recovery, Titanium backup. Some need root and some don't. I'm not sure if I should root before making a system backup (some apps do not function anymore after root?).

Maybe some other things to do when starting clean with a new machine?

    Thanks for the help.

Does it also backup user files (settings, etc)? And does it restore that too?

      Do you use different ROMs?
Maybe I don't need a full backup? Maybe I would only need to backup the (existing) ROM?

Sorry, forgot to ask: it needs root. Doesn't that cause any issues? All apps keeps working?

ROOT won't cause issues, some apps need the root access, while some apps need your device is unrooted.

            Hi geekbuying,

I ordered the tronsmart from you. I'm waiting for it to arrive.

Which apps need an unrooted device? Or do I need to root anyway when I want to try custom roms?

Maybe it's better to make backups with an other app that can make backups without root. Which program can do that and can also backup settings?

Do I need to make a system backup in android? Or just backup the stock rom? With what program do I do that?

i think you need root for most good back up soft i have the same box as you are getting there is no twrp for this box i wish there were or cwm as far as i can find i can see no way to make a full system back up or rescue image as i call it ,the roms finless 1.8 or wasser 1.0.2 are good roms but if i boot into recovery in either of them the remote stops working and i have to pull the power cord and plug it in again to get a normal boot god knows why

forgot to say custom roms are ready rooted

This is all new to me, so I apologize for stupid questions. I also found out that there's no twrp or cwm for our box. But it is possible to do a system backup with Titanium?
But then, do I need a system backup? Maybe when I receive the tronsmart I just need to backup the factory rom and the installed apps (including settings files, does Titanium back that up too?), but also all the android settings (or do they stay when I change rom's?).
How do I backup the factory rom?
What does "boot" into recovery mean? Is that a "safe"-boot mode?
I also read about bootloaders, do I need to know about that too?
What apps don't work on a rooted device?

twrp and cwm are recovery this devices recovery is just more basic you dont need to back up factory rom because you can download it from here or geekbuying, you have to back up what you add to the rom

And I can do that with Titanium backup. I read that it backs up the user data too. Does it back up android settings too?

I guess the stock ROM isn't rooted. I read different ways of rooting:
                    -http://vondroid.com/threads/tronsmart-vega-s89-how-to-root-easily.23463/#.U8Gisvl_tIE
                    -http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php?12076-EZ-root-update-ZIP-for-s802-(all)-quot-Stock-ROM-quot-ROMs
                    -install a custom rom

So maybe this is the way to go? Please comment:
                    1. download a stock rom (instead of trying to backup the installed rom)
                    2. install a custom rom
                    3. install titanium and backup apps and settings
                    After installing a custom rom:
                    1. restore apps and settings with titanium

I have one: read this link

which is about dumping stock rom on a rockchip device.
Think this means backing up the stock rom. Howto (dump only) do on s89-h? Same?

and the next post, but because of beta5 (minix) I dumped the boot.img and get a much more bigger file than at the flashable img (extracted with the 'AML Customization tool(V2)' http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.p...l=1#post179252) and than I need and can't use it (unpack and repack after modifying special thinks)... so the link above is only an entry-point...

that looks like its for some one who knows what their doing and understands linux which aint me until some dev adds twrp to s89-h then i would just use stock or custom rom and back up apps and data with titanium or rom manager or other back up app

Because your dumping the entire NAND space for each partition the file will be larger. Go in with a hex editor and then trim the file of the blank area from the end to the first amount of data.
