Yes Freakbox! What it is? It is an Android TV Box from the Freakbox Community.
We have not told so much over it, until we know everything will go the Way we want and the Users can buy it.
Later today we will make an Official Annoucment over it.

    Regards

"The team has managed to keep the project pretty secret"

Unless you've actually been to freaktab.com in the last six months.

            Edit: maybe not six months.

I suspect people think it has been a secret because the product is nearly to market and they've just heard about it, but this project has actually moved very quickly. Probably quicker than any of us expected.

Also, we've had a public website and facebook page about it up for a few weeks as well.

The question is will Freaktab and its team of breakout Freakbox developers abandon the open source principles and collaborative spirit that is at the core and essence of these forums or will it adopt the same closed-source, proprietary software philosophy as every other existing tv stick / tv box hustler?

I've already seen indications that the latter will be true. Which is a shame, as it would not only be mighty hypocritical but also damaging if it actually were to come to pass.

Wow....REALLY? Please understand that this project is a dream coming true for many of us who have been involved with Freaktab from the beginning....especially Neomode.

Rest assured we fully respect the open source community. This is simply taking our hobby to the next level.

Our developers are literally strung all over the globe. So communication has been quite a challenge.

I have been trying to keep a diary of our progress in the news tab of Freakbox Project site. Its a work in progress.

Don't know if that response is for me, but I didn't mean to sprout such indignation.

I think my question is a fair one as the entire freaktab community is what makes this all possible. I know many (if not all) tv stick manufacturers have been rightfully criticized for their lack of sources, use of proprietary enhancements and general lack of openness. It's all a function of trying to protect profits and limit bootleggers and clones; I was just asking if Freakbox will turn into the same thing? Of course I hope it doesn't, but in a cut-throat market already populated by firms that have mastered the art of cloning, how will you maintain freaktab's philosophical integrity while also turning a profit?

How you handle that question is what ultimately will determine just how different the freaxbox is from other, similar commercial products.

I'm concerned about the use of the rk3188 chip. Amlogic has a fully working pass through supported by the official xbmc. That being said this box should be more stable Then the extremely over rated x7.

Rockchip is the Evil for linux, kernel, GPL etc...
If it is to have obsolete but imposed kernel version like 3.0.x , and painfull android 4.4 for the 3188, then I'm not backing it.
And hope the base price will not be that expensive $150 which will, in july 2014, be a show stopper

Has anyone been able to build Windows XP Rom FW for this or similar/better Android TV device?
I would really be interested, specially with newer devices running on 8 cores and 2+ GB or Ram. Would be a very nice portable PC.

Seen some out there running Android with with Windows on VM (virtual machine)... not what I am after. Want it to boot directly into Win OS, and run fast/er. Nor Ubuntu.

                            Thanks.

It is not possible to Run Windows on this.
This is because it is a different CPU ARM <--> x86.
If you need a small Device to Run take a look here faint-project.com
