PMID 702C Firmware update. Good and bad points

I was using the shipped software on my Big Lots PMID702C, and the browser was best described as "infuriating" and I gave up on using it for email because it would just get stuck and stay dead. Well, today I went through the rigmarole of updating the firmware. Suddenly it's almost like I have a new tablet!

There are a couple of "WTF" moments when the tablet first started up -- like the "Metro-ish" widgets on 2 of the start screens, and the extremely bright color bars that replaced the "sunrise from orbit" boot screen. But the former is removable, and you don't see the latter very often.

If you want to save the apps you have installed (especially if you used one of the "add android market" articles), "adb backup" is your very best friend. "adb restore" then put all my apps -- and the added google market -- back.

In case you an't find the update link, here it is: http://southerntelecom.com/polaroidsupport/firmware/

Maybe not so much. There is a bug in the firmware. Well, 3 that I know of so far.

    1) Wifi not coming back from sleep. Have to either reboot or power wifi off and back on to get it to work
    2) ICS spell checker not working. Flags entire prevoous sentence as misspelled.
    3) no user app can write to /mnt/extad (external SD cars) if you search for "Android media_rw" you will stumble across the reason... http://www.chainfire.eu/articles/113..._to_SD_cards_/ Blame it on Amazon and B&N. They needed a way to secure the special area reserved for their media. And currently this ROM has the problem mentioned in this article. Thank heaven that this thing came pre-rooted. I applied the "Samsung hack" listed on there and I can now write to SD from non root file managers.

For the wifi sleep issue, read this http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.p...After-Sleeping

It works for PMID701i, not sure it will work for 702c, but worth a try.
