    Teclast P89 7.85" Octacore MTK8392 - first impressions

Just received this i-mini retina clone directly from China.

In short: very impressed. Packaging/delivery great, good solid build -really better than expected, no creaks or rattles, or protruding edges... and that nice 2048x1536 retina screen. Telephone (2G/3G), BT and Wifi all working well. Havent tested GPS yet.
Android 4.4 KK. Ordered the "English" option, so not too much Chinese stuff preinstalled (long-hold on icon to disable), no English or German misspellings. Teclast and/or Mediatek seem to have really fitted the fw to the tab/chip, but kept v.close to orig. KK.
I ordered it for my wife, but I'm enjoying using it myself along with my Note 3 and Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2.

Unusual: no hardware volume buttons... only (very precise) on/off button... but tiny pin hole on the golden brushed-metal back marked "rec" lets you to get into recovery without volume buttons (next to a second "reset" hole). Volume controlls are "soft buttons" on-screen left and right of the other on-screen buttons.

Extra features: love the double tap knock-on feature to turn on device (shame it doesnt turn it off as well). Gesture shortcuts can also be programmed to start phone straight into different apps (swipe left/right/up/down etc, from off)
Also happy that this pad, unlike many other Chinese pads, has light-sensor and auto-brightness...which works well.
Normal size sim card and micro SD slots on the side. OTG usb (micro to normal usb adapter + micro usb charger also in the box).
Proper phone-like extra aac speaker and mic on front, so you can really use it as a -very large- phone.
Handy "clear-memory" and "wifi" shortcuts pre-installed on homepage.
One-touch ota fw update shortcut on homescreen.
Has a Mediatek proprietary close-up data-swap alternative to NFC, but I think both devices have to have MTK chips.
Delivered with a plastic screen foil which I'm keeping on as protector. (perfect fit, not noticeable, just have to cut of a "lash" on one corner.)

Speed and Performance: at least subjectively it seems to perform similar to my Sammys... no noticable glitches, bugs or frame drops on 1080p. That Mediatek octacore MTK8392 seems to do a good job. Multi-touch seems to be responsive and works all over screen.
Battery: 5000mah..seems OK. Came fully charged. Still running it in. Got all day pretty constant playing around.
Only found one app it doesnt like so far.. Opera browser (love the auto-text-reflow at all magnifications on Opera). Just crashes back to the homescreen when you open it. The pre-installed browser on the device is that squirrel logo UCBrowser.... also works well.
The tab itself has not frozen or crashed at all yet.

Cons/moans: a few, but really only minor for me..no deal breakers.
Screen, although great indoors, could be a bit brighter for outdoor.
Rear/main camera is positioned on top RH side (seen from back), so when holding it to take photos it is on bottom left and gets covered by your fingers (my camera app doesnt autorotate when I turn it around). That cam position also makes getting a generic cover difficult.
Installed camera app is not good (Orange Tictac box looks yellowish). Different cam app makes camera... acceptable. No camera flash.
No 4G/LTE support on this chip.
Pre-installed "ios-look" launcher isn't very configurable and there's no app drawer, so all the app icons just show up on loads of home screens. Don't seem to be able to add widgets. On-screen Screenshot button is more of a pain for me than usefull (inadvertent taps).
Has gravity sensor, but no giro sensor, so gaming control only with touch or gamepad.
Sound isn't great... but can be improved with an equ. app.

Wish it had come pre-rooted! Have to find out how to root one of these.

Have a look at my P98 thread, try my way of rooting, shouldn't be too surprised if it worked on your tablet too.
