    Test this bug please

I can reliably induce a soft reboot 100% of the time doing the following:

    1. Install BSPlayer Free and ensure these settings are selected (any other combination will not cause a reboot):
    A) Preferences -> Playback Preferences -> Decoding Mode -> "Hardware decoding mode (BSPlayer engine)"
    B) Preferences -> Playback Preferences -> Background playback -> "Audio and video files - pop up video"

    2. Launch a video on bsplayer by clicking on a video file from your favourite file manager. I used both Antek and ES File Explorer. Choose BSPlayer as the app to open the video with.
    3. Once BSPlayer is playing the video: Click the back or home buttons on the navigation bar while a video is playing, making sure it is NOT PAUSED when you click the buttons.
    4. Device will inmediately soft reboot upon moving BSPlayer to the background (video popup window will appear instead if you do not have the bug).

My logcat trace seems to indicate this usage pattern triggers a video decoder bug causing Android's ION memory allocator to exhaust its pool and causing a soft reboot. See attachment if interested.

I will report on minixforums if you guys can reproduce the error and it is not just my box. This is on beta 7.

But xbmc works great imo. So why use other apps?

If this bug is generalized and not just my box then it may help with fixing the other soft reboots.

Besides, this would mean any app can cause a Denial of Service on command without needing any suspicious permissions.

Can you test if it happens to you please?

Thanks, I would appreciate if more people could test it and report yes/no so I can make a stronger case over at Minix.

A reliable soft reboot trigger is actually pretty useful when it comes to debugging driver and codec issues.

You by any chance know if they are aware of the soft reboot issue the beta007 kernel has ?

(just happening after about 20 minutes of playing a movie)

I have no idea as I do not have an account on their forums yet.

I just do not feel like posting vague bug reports as chances of getting stuff fixed increase with solid bug reports that are reproducible, provide log traces and are understood to be widespread and not an odd box here and there.

obviously you are one of those lucky ones who don't suffer the soft restarts bug.....

if you were, you would know how easy it is to reproduce it. you just press play on any movie and wait 20 minutes. beta007

Sorry I don't know the softreboot bug at video watching (I never had it) but they fixed something because of another softreboot bug at 002beta6 so maybe it also helps at this problem... it can also help, if you use at first step a clean fresh install of a beta and test this softreboot bug at video, because maybe it also depends on other parts you install (e.g. add-ons)...

                      didn't install anything

flashed beta007 which wipes anything, started Minix XBMC, picked a movie from my windows machine, started watching, 20 minutes pass....bye bye.

start again, another 20 minutes, and again, bye bye.

solution: flash one of the cpu_fixers zip files from Finless 1.0 ROM (which is an older kernel) on top of the beta007

no more restarts at all !!!! finally able to enjoy this device !!

I no longer "suffer" from this, but they should fix it that's for sure.

Perhaps you are on Finless 1.0 ROM so that's why you don't have it.

I could also provoke my kind of softrestart at 001... I'm actual at 002beta6 (I have done to much "disassembling" before and now at the moment I want to enjoy watching movies )

Actually, I have plenty of other soft reboots and had one while watching a video before even 20 minutes had passed. I had a complete crash/freeze just by unplugging a wireless mouse dongle and plugging a regular usb mouse on the same slot. I had plenty of softreboots by having a USB audio card plugged in and so on...

But you know what? NONE of those bugs are inmediate and 100% reproducible , it is either one or the other. That is why I am interested in figuring out if this one bug is present on other boxes, becouse devs can try fixes out and inmediately test them without wasting half an hour or waiting to get lucky

Ive seen a pattern im my soft reboots they are more common with facebook and spotify installed, and most of my softreboots come when im:

                              A. Alt-Tab to other program when i have loaded xbmc.
                              B. Exiting a movie from inside XBmc
                              C. Putting in my usbhd.
                              D. Heating it in the microwave =)
