    USB power in standby

I noticed that USB hard drives that are connected to my S89 are always on. That happens when device is in standby mode and even when powered down (but with AC plugged). Is such situation normal? I think that USB ports should be powered down during standby and in power off state because external hard drives are not designed for continuous operation. Alternatively is there some app similar to hdparm in Linux that can be used to force power down of the drives?

    Hi,
That depends on the Usb2hd controller.. it seems (and if media-scanner is busy..indexing)
I have 4.. two of the them.. powerdown the HD after 5 min of in-active
-one keeps spinning.. one stops after a hour

    Cheers

Hello, i own a tronsmart vega S89 elite and i have my 3tb hdd inserted in a Plugable Docking Station and connected DIRECTLY to my Vega S89, the results are really good, it goes to standby and it wakes when needed.
The docking station shows a red led when in standby, i have touched the drive and it realy sleeps.

How do you have yours connected?

I have 2 drives directly connected to device. I noticed that they correctly go into standby when device itself is turned on (blue led), just unused. But when device goes into standby then both drives are turned on and spinning. I guess I will just keep Tronsmart on all the time, I hope it doesn't had any harmful impact on it.

I have a WD Elements 1TB external and it wont spin down until I unplug from the usb port, even when the S89 is OFF. Running Finless 1.9

Hope the devs here come up with something. The 'hdparm' command should be available in busybox.
For a box designed to be a tv connected media centre, this should be built in, IMO.

I used to have this HDD connected to an Astone media player and i had the opposite issue of it spinning down when idle, causing lag time waiting for it to spin up.

Something about the S89 usb port is keeping it spinning, even when the S89 is OFF
