Is it really any difference to run an older Xbmc version for s802 or just get the latest at xbmc.org?

It depends what add-ons you want to work. Different add-ons work better with different versions of XBMC, especially when the new versions are released. Sometimes it takes some add-ons longer to catch up. Almost all of the add-ons have caught up and are running on Gotham now, as far as I know
