Bricked NX008HD8G FY0114xxxxx - bad bootanim.zip

Hi,

so I managed to brick my beloved little Nextbook 8HD, and now I need help
getting the tab to run again. Yes, my fault, I admit I screwed up and have
to bear the consequences.

Here's what happened:

The tab is a Next8HD8G made in january 2014. It is rooted, USB-Debugging
is TURNED OFF. Trying to install a custom bootanimation.zip unfortunately
bricked the tab by leaving a black area in the size of the bootanimation
picture overlaid over the screen.

The tablet boots but all but the bottom 1" of the screen stays black. The
bottom 256 pixels (roughly 1.5") can be used, and the black area of the
screen does react to touches, but obviously I have to use it blind.

In the system/media root folder I got the bootanimation.zip which is corrupted,
and a backup named bootanimation.zipx of the original file.

Basically, what I need to do is to delete the /system/media/bootanimation.zip
file and possibly rename bootanimation.zipx back to bootanimation.zip. But
without being able to see what I'm doing, that is kinda impossible.

What would help me a lot would the following:

A way to access the root data from within windows. Obviously USB debugging
will have to be turned on for this. For that to happen I will need screenshots
of the Develloper Options menu that guide me step by step to enable USB
debugging, since I don't see what I'm doing and have to enable this blind.

Or maybe there's an easier way to get this fixed?

I really hope someone here can help me to get my little tab running again.
Especially since where I live it costs about twice the US price.

It might be easier to flash a new ROM (assuming you can boot into recovery by holding volume+ when turning the tablet on...)

I indeed can boot into recovery via Vol+ and Power. However, after my
screwup I'm VERY afraid of making things even worse now.

There's a -wipe media partition- entry at the bottom of the menu.
Would this get rid of the corrupted system/media/bootanimation.zip
file and allow the tablet to boot again?

Alternatively, there's a -wipe data/factory reset- entry. Would this help?
Or would it unroot the device and potentially lock me out from recovering
it for good?

Wipe media erases the internal SD card.

Wipe data erases the /data partition (downloaded apps and such).

Wipe cache erases the /cache partition (user settings and such).

Factory reset erases both /data and /cache.

None of the options undo any changes to the /system partition (because /system is assumed to be read only on a non-rooted device).

The only way to undo changes to /system is manually (difficult blind and with no ADB access), or to flash a ROM.

I also think I found a file manager that can be run in recovery
mode on rooted devices, as long as I can get the zip installed.
That would be a solution. Will report back with results.

Discovered the file manager built into TWRP and successfully
renamed the backup bootanimation.zipx to bootanimation.zip.
Tablet boots fine and is fully unbricked.

Yes, if you can successfully run a file manager from recovery that would allow you to make changes.
