aaaand... the video playback is unwatchable (jerky)
I plan to flash a new ROM, as soon as I find some basic instructions to
    root->backup->flash
if anybody can point me to a relevant thread, it would save me searching time, thanks !
I am used to flashing my phone and tablet, but this is something else, flashing a device with no screen and just 1 button

    cheers,

If you typed in numbers from your board you would find many posts about your device.

It would have been much easier thing to do than making a new thread and typing all these stuff.

Oh, sure, there are lots of CS918 in the forum

The problem is a new version comes out every week, and I never seen one like mine (version 5?).
Neither have you, or anybody it seems.

Anyway, I have already rooted it (Root Genius).
I plan to flash the crap out of it, until it works properly or it goes into the trash.

If it works, I will will post every detail, so people who buy this thing may benefit.
That is the point of the forum, right?

I have same device as you do, yours is missing 1 ram chip which means you have only 1gb of ram.
You can use CS918 firmware if you want to upgrade, it will work because hardware is the same.

              Thanks,

I m just done backing up stock ROM using the method described here

It took me a while to figure out how o get to bootload mode, pressing the button under the device while putting the power on.

Anyway, did you manage to get proper video? Did you go for a Kitkat ROM?

Im using stock UPDATED firmware, everything is working fine, XBMC is working great and that is what I need so I didnt do anything else other than adding heat-sink and connecting 5v fan to mobo.

Device is connected to the TV and I dont feel like disconnecting and trying different firmware, maybe in the future but right now, my wife is watching shows all day, I dont want any trouble.

BTW stick to stock firmware, i have read nothing but problems with custom firmwares.
Try this stock firmware, (looks like newer version which I found today) and let me know how it works.

                  I owe you one!
It works great, and I am now on Kitkat.

Video playback which was my main problem, is almost perfect. I find MX Player gives the best quality.
I am still going to try out with custom kernels, because of 2 things:
                  1. 1080 resolution. 720 for video is OK, but for my photos I prefer 1080.
                  2. NTFS support. My external HD is not recognized, a message says it ony takes FAT32. I think I saw somewhere there is already NTFS support for Kitkat.

                    Hi all,

As promised, here is what I did with this box, in case it may help somebody:

                    1. Rooting
                    I used RootGenius_en.exe
First you need to activate 2 settings:
                    1. USB -> Connect to PC
                    2. Developer options -> USB debugging
                    To activate Developer options:
                    Settings->about device->click 7 times on Build number

                    2. Install drivers on your PC
I used DriverInstaller_2014 from Sergio Poverony

                    3. Backup
At this point I would recommend a backup of your factory ROM.
This makes sure that everything is working with the PC, driver, cables, bootloader mode etc.before you start flashing.
It also gives you the possibility of going back to the factory ROM later.
I used the package and instructions here

The tool for dumping the factory ROM to the computer is ROM_Dumper_Tool.exe.
To put the box in download mode:
                    1 launch ROM_Dumper_Tool.exe.
2 unplug the box power supply
3 with the supplied USB cable, connect the PC to the box
4 keep pressed the "recover button under the box while you plug in the power supply
5 the device should berecognized by ROM_Dumper_Tool.exe.

                    4. Flash alternative ROMS
                    Used Rockchip_Batch_Tool_v1.6
                    Same procedure as above.
The best Kitkat ROM I found for this box is cyxtech_rk31_cs918V6_8723_140829_4.4_8g2g
                    However, it only displays 1280x720
