Total noob android tv box needs help.

Hi all, I've just ordered one of these M8 Quad Core Android Smart Mini PC TV Box XBMC MX wifi 5G 4K KIT KAT Ultra HD 3D

I have knowledge of flashing and rooting my phones with custom recoveries and roms, firmware etc. But I don't know where to start with one of these and there are so many sub forums on here I don't know which one I should be looking at. I'm a quick learner so it shouldn't take me long to get up to speed.

Check what Box you really have Clone or Real, may have to have a look inside.

Well yes, as long as it's the real deal and your guess is correct.
4 screws underneath the rubber pads will get the cover of to be sure.
As you may have aware lots of clones around.

in saying that, if the Seller is reputable than yes it should be OK.

Noticed last night, when I was messing with the box, the sticker underneath says its a M8N. That's the same thing right?

I have plugged my external 1Tb hard drive which when used with the pc, powers up with the pc and shuts down with the pc. The problem with the M8 is it doesnt totally power off so the exhdd doesnt power down unless i manually switch it off. Anyone know how I can get around this?

M8 has a bit of a problem in that area, some new Rom developers are trying to resolve the issue
Until then.

My suggestion is the remote power switch. I use something like this to kill power to the lot and saves a bit on using standby power also.

Thanks I'll see if I can get one or get off my backside and turn it off. I wonder how much power it uses when its asleep.
