    Advice on crashing/overheating Vega s89-h

Hi Guys, My s89-h is a few months old now and I've never really tried to play games on it before. However I thought I'd give it a go with a games like Asphalt 8, Buggy Blitz and a few others. The Vega s89-h basically crashes as soon as the game (eg a race is about to start). Screen usually goes a random color with a stuck sound or flickers. Only way out is to restart the Vega.
I'm from Australia and we had a few really hot days last week and the Vega was crashing on pretty much anything (Opening Chrome, XBMX, Youtube). I opened it up and applied some old arctic silver thermal paste but that made no difference. So then I bought a laptop cooling fan and that has reduced the crashes a lot. Though still doesn't help with games.
I downloaded a CPU Temp app and it says my CPU temp is hovering around 75 degrees Celsius. In XBMC is says my CPU Temp is about 86 degrees Celsius.
Just wondering if anyone else has any ideas, cos it should be able to run games without crashing right? Thanks

You have done pretty much everything that I could think of

Move to NZ or look up Minix heating problems, several have core drilled the lid and placed mesh from the inside like i did, possibly if you core drill you may be able to attach a small fan blowing onto the core!

Gold! that will fix it lol!

yep it was 38 degrees on Goldcoast on Saturday, and my unit was stuggling aswell, i have drilled out the base ( where the current holes are ) applied themal paste to heatsink ( brought from Jaycar, cant remember the brand ) and fitted a 5v fan to the lid, and a couple of holes around the front to let the fan breathe...
mine sits on 40 idling at home screen, and up to 60 degrees on 104k4, and 75 degrees on 108k4.
XBMC has root rights, and it you read the toast pop ups, one is to up the cpu frequencies.
I installed racky's boot image that allows changes to cpu frequencies to 'stick' , i use interactive governer and 1608 frequency and it's ok... and 'set cpu' to monitor them.

i'm still not sure if the temps from the 'cputemp' app are legit, as i've had my lid off and the heatsink is dead cold, but it's apparenly 75 degrees!

        here's my unit:

I take it it is your own wifi antenna mod too?

What is that cable coming out of the wall plate in the background?

yes i had to remove the antenna wire which is soldered to the lid of the unit to make way for the thermo fan, so i had an old x-box wifi dongle lying around, so i thought.. why not ;p.

That is the antenna coax for my PVR set top box...

Canada ... haha NZ is closer lol ...

Can you change the heat sink to a larger or better one?

For me sounds like you have one of the frist SoC's which have problems do determine the real temperature so they use a way to calculate it at kernel (I call it "fake")...
If you are able to get the dmesg and find there something like 'not trimmed' you have one of these SoC's...

The app 'CPU Temp' works fine at the s802...

Advantage is: The first SOC's (1e batch) doesnt have the HDMI problems.....

Thanks for your suggestions (except maybe moving to NZ). I think I might have to drill some holes and install a fan blowing directly onto the CPU and/or replace the heatsink. Gee I wished things just worked the way they should from the box

yeah i got mine quite early... first batch so far HDMI is fine ( touch wood )

i knew the readings were questionable as it can drop from 70 to 40 in a second lol... ( i use cpu temp app aswell )

can we modd the kernal on the early units? apart from Racky's cpu frequency fix ?

Of cause you can use it!

Only the temperature value is calculated at kernels I think >104k (depending on the use frequency which is normally driven by the utilization) BUT the temperature value controls the frequencies,
                            - so if they aren't real, at a hotter environment maybe you will get freezing problems because of overheating...
                            - another story is, because of "depending on the use frequency", you will get problems with higher starting frequencies (min) because the calculated temperature is higher so you maybe aren't able to get maximum frequency at peaks...
