    AMLogic M8 box (from ****) - I've buggered it! - help!

Hi - firstly let me say hello to this forum, first post - and I'm asking for help. I'm completely new to android boxes. I've moved from a raspberry pi - to an M8 because the Rpi was just too slow, but I knew how to deal with issues on the pi, as you can take the sd card out, edit config.txt etc.. this is a new ball game for me.

So I bought one of these on ****..

    http://www.****.co.uk/itm/1714186030...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Everything was great, it came pre-installed with XBMC Gotham 13.2 - a shed load of plugins i dont need (so they got removed)

    google store worked fine

I remember seeing a "test Build" dated in July.

    OK - here's how I broke it.

I was unable to save content to the external USB hardrive, so read online about editing platform.xml in permissions folder. To add the line media_rw. I did this, but it had no effect. I am on Android KitKat 4.4.2.

So I decided - stupidly! - To add a few extra lines in some of the other tags, and now it won't boot. Gets black screen, then reboots.

    My question is, can I....

    A) somehow connect this to a PC to access the root folder and restore my platform.xml (I backed it up)

    B) Flash it to factory settings. I need to know what image I should use to get it back to a standard setup, (rooted) with XBMC 13.2 preinstalled. - any advice on what image to use would be great (I believe I have to copy the zip to an sd card, and boot with pin pressed in AV slot?)

Hoping someone can help me out here.

Also - if I do manage to get it restored / fixed. Does anyone know how I can allow the device to write to external USB storage?

    Thanks

    Hi Bobfat,
Probably the easiest thing to do, is contact the seller. Ask them for the rom file to reflash it.
I thought I killed my M8 when I first got it, and contacted the seller. Guy sent me a link to the firmware and I was back in business in minutes.

The only other thing to do, is identify that you have a genuine box, and flash it with one of the custom roms in this forum. ( you will however loose all the XBMC plugins, but that`s easy to resolve)

The writing to external sources might be a kitkat security measure. I had the same issue and a free APP off the playstore resolved it.

Think it might be to do with this..

BTW, I was a former Pi user. You probably used either openelec or raspbmc.
A bit of advice, whatever you learned about the pi, try and forget it. These box`s work differently on android. Shame about the pi being so slow. It was a cracking litle box.

    Cheers

thanks - I've sent them a mail for link to firmware

Do you know what name of the app is on the store to allow full write access to USB ext storage?

Also, if the seller doesn't provide me a link, is there anyway of me identifying if the box is genuine?

The seller advertised it as Genuine (in several places on the advert)

If it is genuine, which firmare image is the best (eg pre-installed with XBMC 13.2 and rooted) with 4.4.2 (most stable) - don't care about XBMC plugins, would prefer to start from scratch.

I don't know what you want to do...
        1) normal write access (e.g. to copy files at it)?
=> FAT32 and NTFS should be supported (worst case try https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...aragon.mounter )
        2) do you want to move/map apps to it?
=> no way because of KK

looks like I've really messed up now.

The seller mailed me back with the latest K200 custom firmware. And instructions.

But didnt realise how flimsy these things are. I inserted toothpick in AV hole, heard it click, but then slipped off, applied again, powered on. Got purple screen on AMLogic load screen, so powered off again, reclicked, and now I get no blue light at all, and nothing on the display.

I can see a red light on the device (possibly the digital audio) - and If I plugg network cable in, I can see flashing, so It's getting power.

I emailed the seller again, and they said I must have damaged something inside with toothpick. He will get back to me, on a resolution. Don't want to take it apart just yet, in case he kindly offers me a swap (doubt it tough)

Let's see how I get on.

The reason I wanted WRITE access to external storage is so that XBMC can save downloads to USB hard drive. My films are on it, and it's 2TB (NTFS). At the moment I get script errors when saving to it, but it's fine savng to SD card.

I think (but not sure, because I don't use something like this) it isn't an Android problem but a XBMC problem (maybe the add-on isn't compatible with the XBMC version you use)...
Maybe you use FAT32 at the SD and there is no problem with FAT32 but with NTFS...
Maybe also a problem that the script, instead of the SD, it didn't find the HDD (because of the name???)...
I'm also not sure about the 2TB (normaly it shoudn't be a problem, but who knows???)...

I also tried MAME4All on play store.

It allowed me to create ROMS folder on SD Card, or on internal NAND.

But when I let the Mame4all app create the ROMS folder on external USB drive, it failed, saying "check persmissions" or something.

also - my M8 box isn't lighting up. I cannot see how my toothpick would have damaged a component, as there doesn't seem to be anything behind the reset button.

Is there an application I can use to flash this through USB, or is there a way to revive this so I can enter recovery mode?

              Thanks

Bobfat.. have you tried flashing it again.? The purple screen on boot logo usually means the hdmi cable isn't in correctly.. doesn't affect the flashing process. You might need to open that box up.. its only 4 screws under the rubber feet.

Yes, tried several times, just no boot any more. Nothing display wise, and no blue light.

                  Can anyone help with this?

ive downloaded the amlogic usb flashing tool from here.

when I connect the device via usb, then press the av pin for recovery, it recognises the device.

but when I load the recovery.img (8mb) from the recovery zip the seller sent to me, I get an error in the program, just after it loads the img file.

does anyone know of a stock .img file for recovering this way, for an M8 amlogic s802 8mb square device?

once I can get it to boot with something, I can do standard recovery and then re flash with their firmware.
