    Help with firmware and updating.

    Hello.

I got into this scene not too long ago so I'm still sort of a noob. I will attach a picture or two of my firmware version and everything else. What I really want to know is..how do I update the firmware on the M8 box?
The Kernel version is 3.10.33 and under that it has some ubuntu name. Is my box running Linux or?
I guess I would like to see if there's a link to a file I need to get to update my box because I'm nervous to click on "System Update" under the settings tab. Don't want to lose anything or brick the box.

Another question I have is..how do I update my xbmc to the new Kodi and whether it is stable or not? I have been on this 13.2 Gotham for a while now.

If you could explain it in noob terms and not very technical, I would greatly appreciate that.
    Thank you everyone.

If its just a newer xbmc you want just grab the kodi nightly build apk. 13.2 it the latest stable release. xbmc has a new name now it's called kodi grab the rc or latest nightly build for arm if u want the latest xbmc

Thanks grant2258. I was sort of thinking that was the case and I could just do it that way. What about the other questions? My M8 box has a Ethernet issue since day one. It picks up wifi just fine but when I turn that off and click on Ethernet (with my cable in) it keeps saying "Connecting" for the longest time and nothing happens. That is why I am asking about firmware updates and which one is specific for my box.

Any further help would be appreciated.

Finless is the way to go I believe the ethernet issue is file permissions

Alright. The ethernet thing is not the biggest of my worries as I could still use WiFi for the time being. As for the Finless, is it the 1.8 version or is there newer ones? I'm still quite new on here so I'm still a noob. Also, is that specifically for my box (from the pictures provided)? Hopefully I wouldn't have to worry about any "bricking" happening.

I thought I replied to this I couldn't have hit send. There is always a possibility of bricking but this can be undone if it happens. It's safer updating via the otg app on the box as no recovery is needed. All you do is unzip finless to your memory card and select it from your ota app can't remember where it is off hand think it in settings and update. 1.8 is the latest for the box. I don't see any pictures on this thread but if it's a m8 square you are good to go.

Thank you for the information. Hmm, it is quite odd that the images did not show up in the thread. I will try them again and hopefully you will see them. One more question, with the firmware I have now (original that came with the box), would this update make it look different or just update bugs? Or perhaps add a lot more features that's lacking?

I assume I will lose everything on xbmc if I don't back it up? Hope the pics show up this time..thanks Grant.

You can back your xbmc data up to your memory card

Honestly unless there is a problem with your box there is no need to update unless you just want to try a new rom. If you are happy as is just keep the box the way it is

I backed up my xbmc to a sdcard. Made a folder in there named 'Backup'. That is the same sdcard that I will use to update the rom. I totally understand grant2258 but the thing is..I am experiences some issues. Ethernet won't work, random crashes, sometimes the thing would turn off but the light would still be on and my tv saying 'no signal'. Also, I'd like to try another rom because maybe it has more goodies and updates. How do I backup this current rom that I have just in case something goes wrong? (same way as the update process under the settings?)

p.s. Hopefully the pictures worked so you can 100% see if Finless is for my tv box. Thanks.

There is no 100% you can backup what you have on the box all you have to do is get a sshd apk and dd or cat the contents to a usb or memory card. But it shouldn't be a problem if u do brick because the probox2 image can fix your box

Thanks. I have an SD card ready for this (it also has my backup of xbmc on it, don't think it needs to be fresh cleaned for this update). I am not sure what you mean by "apk and dd or cat the contents to memory card"
