Instead I installed the Google Drive App from the Play Store and found it works very well - for me. Perhaps others will also find it an easier solution for serving up media.
My needs are modest, having need to share recent hiking photos, a few videos and summer flowers on the big living room screen. You will, of course need a Google Drive account. I edit all my photos in Google Picassa. It's the fastest, most efficient photo editor for the amateur photographer, IMO. I can spiff up over a hundred photos in less than a half hour.
Then, I upload the desired photos to my Google Drive under a folder system that makes perfect sense - to me. In order to make the folders sort right I name the folders 2014-06-10, in a year, month, day format, appending a short descriptive name to quickly identify the activity or subject. Once the Google Drive app has focus it takes only two mouse clicks to have a screen full of thumbnails on the screen. Once a photo is selected, the remote directional pad scrolls the photos forth and back, just as you would expect. It is very snappy, too!
I looked at slide show apps but decided I really have no need for one since I rarely show photos and I want to narrate them as I go anyway. I will select the next photo when I'm darn good and ready! I hope this helps people show their personal media as easily as possible. It's a much simpler and easier solution for me.
