XBMC HDMI passthrough ok in stereo but not in 5.1, SPDIF passthrough fully working

I'm experiencing the following behaviour on my Minix X8 when playing a video that is Dolby 5.1 (AC3):


- HDMI passthrough works in stereo from XBMC, but I only get static if I state that my system can decode dolby 5.1
- HDMI passthrough works when playing the file from MXPlayer, soundbar gets correctly the 5.1
- SPDIF passthrough works fine from XBMC and MXPlayer

Here is my config: X8 connected to TV by HDMI cable, TV connected to soundbar by optical cable.


I would like to avoid connecting directly the minix to the soundbar or having to use a spdif switch...


Any idea is welcome to find out what is wrong!

The latest MX player APP no longer has built in Dolby AC3. You have to download the codec. It was a licensing issue so MX had to remove it.

I did not check the version of MX Player on the Minix, but AFAIK it does not need AC3 Dolby licence to send the audio Stream using passthrough as no decoding occurs. The soundbar receives AC3 correctly with MX Player.

What I can't figure out is what is really causing this.
The fact that MX Player does output AC3 5.1 using HDMI passthrough makes me think the Minix FW is ok and parameters too for HDMI passthrough...
The fact that XBMC is outputting correct AC3 5.1 using SPDIF passthrough makes me think that XBMC is also ok...
So there must be something wrong between XBMC and HDMI passthrough...

I'm having the same issue. All of the players outside of the Minix XBMC app pass through 5.1 dolby through HDMI. I have tried all the different combinations of output in Minix XBMC, most options simply output a buzzing sound. The only choice that allows me to get normal audio is to have only the passthrough option, but it does not provide dolby.

I really hope there is some fix in the XBMC app or if there is a later version of Kodi that can pass through dolby.

I'm guessing from the lack of response to this thread there is no fix or work around to the dolby pass through over HDMI in Minix XBMC or other Kodi builds. It's too bad because I purchased the Minix system as it stated it has dolby passthrough, which is does but just not through XBMC which is what I use for playing all my digital media from a cloud drive. If anyone has suggestions to try I would love to hear them, or if there is a later version of XBMC or Kodi that may work I can try that as well.
