Got my Pipo X7! Thanks Gearbest!

Special thanks to Anna from Gearbest for sending me the new Pipo X7!!!

As you know we are pretty Android OS focused here at FreakTab but with the Intel TV boxes coming out and ability to run Windows 8.1, things may change if these boxes start blowing away the ARM based Android boxes. As many know, there is no "perfect" Android TV box out there. They all have some issue or another doing everything users want. I am not saying Windows 8.1 is perfect either but we shall see how this rolls out!

While I am very Windows Savvy on PC's, I am not very Windows 8 savvy or Windows on a box like this.
So stay tuned more to come I am sure!

    Now to play

Arghghghg, everyone has one except me

The only potential problem I can see with these windows boxes is the same problem that all regular windows users encounter which is malware/virii. It doesn't matter how well I set up firewalls/anti virus/anti malware protection my family will still manage to infect their laptops with something at least twice a year each. It has gotten to the point where I have made clones of all of their machines after they were set up so I don't even bother trying to repair them any more, I just restore the clone.

These boxes are going to be exactly the same for my family so I will leave them with the Android boxes where they have far less chance of breaking it and saves me support time

Can't wait for one myself tho, So many more options than the android boxes to explore.

That is why you do backups
Win 7 and 8 have a backup utility that can actually make a disk image! Works great.

Also I suggest first thing you do it make a recovery drive!
I just did that to a 32gig USB stick.
Then do a backup image to another USB stick.

Also I have analized the partition details. Like many laptops this has a recovery partition that allows you to do a full restore of the factory image.

        More tips to come.

One suggestion I would have especially if malware is a constant issue is to look into Software Restriction Policies. (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../hh831534.aspx) Open up the Local Security Policy under Administrative Tools, and configure the policy to whitelist the Microsoft publisher and then the paths for programs you want installed. Any other code will not be executable.

Another option would be have two accounts -- one for administrator and one for daily use. The admin has full access to the machine to do whatever they want. For day-to-day use, the other user assign him into kiosk mode with Assigned Access. (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/hyperyash/ar...ndows-8-1.aspx) That user boots into only the applications you set, and can't open any other applications. For an HTPC simply running Kodi, this might be ideal and the simplest answer.

              Hi to any1

Is the bootloader open? I buy the 808B, 908II, A928 and AW80 but I look for a box which work with Linux, not like the AW80 (just a Raspbian port).

              Regards

It's windows so it boot a MBR / UEFI booter. It has a BIOS just like a PC although limited. There is no boot loader in NAND like Android.

I have successfully booted a win install from USB stick

Just looking at this thread and this box and i would have similar troubles with young children. I thought about getting a copy of Deep Freeze. Its a really good product. http://www.faronics.com/ The kids can do anything they want and as soon as it reboots it goes to the last frozen state. I used it for a customer for over 2 years now with no viruses and there laptops are free for there users to do anything that they want.

Look free 30 day trial http://www.faronics.com/downloads/do...m/?product=DFS so you can make sure it works.
